I've got a buddy that flys those small Citation type jets. He's a "hearty guy" can't imagine how he stuffs himself into the flight cabin!

Now that is interesting, next time I’m on the ramp I’ll take a look at that. It makes sense to not just rely on gravity, but also take advantage of aerodynamics.

I’m just a private pilot so I’m not up to snuff on the RAT. Do you know if it is automatically deployed? I’m sure there are differences between manufacturers, but I would think this system would auto deploy once an electrical failure is detected.

You can see it pretty clearly here
    IMG_1842.jpg

This is also one of the reasons for the speed limitation being much lower to retract the gear than extending or it being extended. The pump and hydraulics are not only pulling on the weight of the gear, but also against the aerodynamic force on the doors and the wind on the nose gear

It’s pretty common across types that the RAT, if it has one, auto deploys with the loss of both primary AC busses. On the Bus it’s both AC BUS one and two. I remember (I think, it’s been a while) on the CRJ it was triggered on loss of power to the AC essential bus, which basically happens when both AC busses are lost, so same idea. Depending on the type there are usually other triggers as well, the 78 I’ve heard has several since it’s such a highly electrical dependent airplane. We can always manually deploy it if the situation warrants.

Appreciate the insights! Like everyone else in the industry, I’m always curious and learning something new.

From AUN to Sanders. They did the major resto back to stock TM20.

So cool. Some friends and I got a private tour of the operation from Dennis Sanders and one of his employees a few weeks ago. They do breathtakingly beautiful work. It was humbling to park my puny homebuilt near one of Sanders’ magnificent machines.

Dude, that Corsair resto...did you see it?

In the latter part of our racing career, we did most of our test flight work down though there after repairs and mods. The strip is so much better in several ways than AUN for that purpose.

And, anyone qualified and close enough for a job in their smokewinder shop?

OK, now you got me going down memory lane.

Since it is a big Army birthday, hats off to Private James Flanagan. I had the pleasure of being regularly belittled, sworn at, and viciously jabbed by this guy. At the time, I think I was too young and stupid to truly appreciate it.

1944, the on holding the flag. He was 17. But don't tell anyone that.

Did I ever. I stood back so the drool didn't splatter on it. And then there were the Bristol Centaurus engines lined up in one of the storage rooms...

I'm mostly qualified except I'm enjoying retirement too much.

What were you racing? I imagine you've posted about it here but have a little consideration for a noob.

A friend has a hangar to the south of Sanders' shop where he keeps some of his classics and likely these days his T-33. He used to do a classic/antique fly-in there but passed on it this year. Too bad, it was a good time and Dennis Sanders always did some fly-byes in his Sea Fury.

No shit. That was the heyday of Reno. I managed to attend every year from 1994 to 2010, turned around and went home in 2011 when I got the news enroute that year. I remember Critical Mass well. Later on, Voodoo was hangared a few doors down from me. Sure was fun when they were getting it prepped.

I'm interested to see how things shake out in New Mexico.

Catching up on some more airshow photos....here's a collection of favorites from Wings Over Wayne at Seymour Johnson AFB in May. Lots of F-15 action! Apologies for the quality being degraded in the upload.

That T-33 belongs to my hangar neighbor, Greg Colyer. I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time a few years ago, he asked what I was doing. “Nothing important.” “Get in, we’ll go fly my whole airshow routine.” So we did, twice. Ride of a lifetime.

Really cool story!! I enjoyed seeing Greg fly the T-33. Very unique aircraft.
