He said his tank can be full and say it has 6 miles to empty. That's not a range complaint. That's a faulty gauge complaint.

Technically that’s a range estimate complaint, not a gauge complaint. I’m not seeing him say the gauge shows empty, only that the range is off.

mine is off after a fill up for 30s or so and then snaps to normal, but the quantity is always there

Miles to empty has always been meaningless and should have never been put into production. What's the actual gauge say?

    That's hyperbolic and pointless.

Fair point. I was assuming that the range display and the gauge would be linked and for it to say low DTE it would have to have a low reading on the gauge.

Toyota's algorithm for estimating range has always been wonky. In every other brand vehicle I put the confidence interval on that readout as ±20 miles; in my 3rd gen I peg it at ±50miles. It can be way off at times. Granted, having it error at ±300 miles means the software is definitely glitched and there is something wrong. However, the state of the primary gauge is what determines the difference between an inconvenient defect and a dangerous defect, in my opinion.

It probably sounds like a lot of problems and isnt. Rav4 with filler issues, Tundra had a fuel line recall early on Tundra and Tacoma have correct fuel gauge reading issues. I think Tundra had fuel sending problems something to do with the pump. Certain 3G had the high pressure pump recall. What's going on at Toyota to cause these problems? The number of effective vehicles could be lower than average compared to other manufacturers. There seems to be a trend here.

I haven't noticed anything like the gauge reading differently the next morning. The miles to empty as seemed to diminish towards empty, and when it really did show empty I did not run out of gas.

Yeah, the DTE in all cars is conservative/has a reserve for, at minimum, these two reasons:
    1. Manufacturers know many customers are idiots that will run down to "empty" and this prevents them being stranded. It's not altruism, it's business. Whether it is to avoid calls to the complimentary road side assistance some new cars come with for a few years/miles or to avoid the imagery of their product broken down on the side of the road.
    2. Fuel tanks aren't always level and are large enough that even a few gallons gets spread thin. That can starve the fuel pump or lack sufficient cooling for it because the fuel is spread so thin or the vehicle is driven on and incline that tilts the fuel away from the pump.
The people that see a vehicle has an X gallon tank, run the DTE to zero, and then complain/bitch/moan that it only took Y gallons (where Y is less than X) are retarded. Especially if they think it's false advertisement or that they can sue over it.

Easy fix, I have an Ultragauge in my Gen 2. It's always within 0.2 litres when I fill up. I calibrated it more than 12 years ago after about 300 km. Problem solved!

Have you tried disconnecting the negative battery terminal and reconnecting it to reset the miles to empty read out?
