I do still have a 1986 2WD Toyota pu I've had for around 25 years, I plan on keeping it, great backup today, it's never let me down. Dang it I shouldn't have said that.

Problem solved. Personal lesson learned, ...I will try my best not to buy refurbished parts, unless it's a body part, fender, steering wheel, things like that. I'll try to shorten the story. Cylinder 5 not firing, internet info leans to fuel injector fail but code result suggests bad coil. Put your hand at the exhaust and you will feel a puff of exhaust, a steady beat, feels like driving on rumble strips at 60mph when pressing the gas pedal. I bought new coil, no change. Installed 6 refurbished injectors, barely made it around the block, truck died in driveway, thought I was in trouble then. The next day I installed the old injectors but left the refurbished injector in #5. Truck ran much better than it did with the refurbished injectors but there was still no fire in #5 so I was back to the original problem, but there was one difference, the old original injector would work fine when the engine was cold and even warmed up at times but turning the engine off for 20 minutes or so and then starting would leave the #5 injector not working. When I left the refurbished injector in #5, I was getting no fire in #5 at all whether it was with a cold start or warm start, so that was a clue. I took the plenums off a third time and installed a brand new injector in #5, it's running like new now.

sweet and congratulations... I hope this success keeps you in the game. After working on most anything with a motor for the last 40 years I can tell that I have learned much more from my failures than my success's. Failures linger and sting but after a week you will laugh it off.

Thanks, I do feel good about it even though I spent $500-600 in parts while I could have gotten away with spending only $120. I'm looking for excuses to drive the truck now haha, "I think I'm thirsty, I'm going to get a Mountain Dew." I did learn a lot and I have extra parts now. I should probably get 5 more "new" injectors but I'm going to wait.

Hey everyone, I had the same misfire on #2. My 1999 Prerunner w/249K on it Needed a fuel injector. Ran like crap on a warm start. I got lucky on my refurburbed injectors. 6 for 89.00 Lifetime warranty and if I send them my old ones they will pay me 30 bucks. It was a long story before this happy ending thats for sure. Be careful who you by injectors from. The first place I bought them from advertised as OEM new Densos. You could tell they were copies but they never admitted it. Sent those back before those imposters made my truck talk Chinese. Did my valve cover gaskets too. Oh sorry they are called Cylinder Head Gaskets. 21 gaskets and seals + the sealer. Could have taken it to a mechanic but I would have missed out on banging my head on the hood wind defector 10 times and my wallet is still fat. got to go. I love when my old truck runs perfect!

On my 99 toyota 3.4 I had a rough idle and check engine light on with cylinder 6 misfire. I replaced the spark plugs thinking try the most simplest cheapest fix first. Well that didn't work. Still missing. So I then decided to order a new injector. Spent a half day pulling the air take manifold, throttle body, fuel rail off. I put new gaskets on the manifold once I put new injector and everything back together. Started up and wasn't missing. Thought I fixed it. Went for a test drive. Check engine light came on and started missing. Few cuss words and opened up the hood again. Switched the ignition coil that shares with cylinder 6 with another ignition coil. Test drive now check engine light blinks. So I head back to the shop and then check engine light stays on. Open the hood again. And what do I find well I should of found earlier with the spark plugs. But the spark plug boot on cylinder 6 was tracking through the insulation and goin to ground. A little black squiggly line if you will on the outside of the boot. New spark plug wire and boot and shes running like a top.

IIRC - You participated in my thread about the truck dying and limping and Toyota not covering it under warranty. It was injectors. I'll bet a lot of the issues that are swept under the rug for the Taco (economy / power) are really the result of bad injectors.

Yes, that was me and thanks for the reply. I like my old gen1 and fingers crossed it’s just a fuel injector on cylinder #2.

I resurrected this thread to thank @fedup for following through so many members come on here with questions then just disappear. I learned a lot from your thread and thank you for following through until your issue was resolved!
