3rd gen Tacoma here , my truck doesn’t blow any cold air unless I have the engine on , I sit in my truck a lot for long periods of time and want to have cold air from the AC without having the engine running because it drains fuel and is bad for the truck , however if I use the switch mode , the AC does not blow any cold air it just blows room temperature air , what could be the reason and how could I fix it

Your vehicle is functioning as designed.

The reason is your a/c compressor isn't turning when the engine isn't running, as it is powered off a belt that is in turn powered by the engine. No engine running = no a/c compressor running = no cold air.

You could put a generator in the bed and then mount a window unit on the passenger side

This idea makes more sense than thinking you will get Cold Air from A/C with the engine off. :)
I dont think Jesus does A/C

Sure it would look a little cleaner with some colormatch paint but cool as a cucumber!

Only hybrids and electric vehicles can have A/C running without the engine running although hybrids will still run the engine periodically to charge the battery.

Assuming this isn't a troll post, I was just wondering if one COULD install an RV air conditioner (like on the roof of the Taco), and if they sell one small enough (in BTU terms) to even make it feasible because a unit with too much BTU capability is worse than a unit with not enough BTU capability for various reasons. Or maybe one of those split units I occasionally see on 18 wheelers - like mount the condenser unit in the bed of the truck.

I clicked on this thread thinking someone was having a legit A/C problem. The A/C compressor in a non-hybrid vehicle will only engage when the engine is running, as the compressor is run by the serpentine belt.

Also, some A/C systems are more efficient than others, but as a rule of thumb R134a systems (and R1234yf in newer 3rd Gens) do not blow as cold as R-12 systems when the vehicle is stationary.
Unfortunately, R-12 was outlawed in new vehicles after 1994, and 1992 was the last year that all vehicles had R-12.

CAI mod is the easiest fix. Thankfully I owned a 2Gen (best gen) and never had this kind of problem.

We all had to learn about how things work (at least in generalities) at some point in our automotive journey. I've been at it a couple of minutes and still learn new things all the time. Just as a hobby.

Maybe you can find a reliable information source who you could buy lunch for a couple of times, and get them to describe basic systems functions for you. Kind of like Drivers Ed classes used to do. It would help bring you up to speed a little faster. And sometimes Googling a specific system will give you enough of a generic answer to help get you going.

I wasn’t going to comment but I just can’t help myself. What the heck are you thinking. If the electric is will your refrigerator work? NO
