Is there a Toyota or third party specification/ analysis of what really happens in learning mode? For how long is it required? How can one save the result and re-enter it without "driving for a long time to see..."?

After driving in S mode for 12 months straight I used D mode this winter due to injuries. To my great surprise it wasn't dying in 5th at 36mph anymore. With warmer weather it started to get stupid... and then I disconnected battery for some work. Now it's truly dumb and I'm back to S mode 100% and disgusted with this truck 200%.

    Is there validity to this:
    https://m.smogtips.com/smog-question/3784/How-To-Complete-Toyota-Tacoma-Drive-Cycle
Reads like a procedural hazing. The writer left out the part about clicking your heels three times and slapping your head just right.

Can just OTT tune it and it’ll be 95% fixed in about 10 min…no heal clicks or magic wands required.

According to local OTT vendor, tuning does NOT change the shift points at normal/low gas throttle flows. Yes we tried it and reset it.
My issue is with the idiotic factory shift/speed points which I have to manage manually.
And of course lugging on slight slopes and getting no throttle response until it roars and drops two gears at once.

Your talking about two entirely different things.

A drive cycle is the steps needed to get all of the monitors to run for emissions verification purposes.

    Adaptive learning is always happening.

Here's a document with probably more than you ever wanted to know but it goes into great detail about how the AC60 transmission operates and how the adaptive learning works.

You can reset the engine and tranmission adaptives (with a scan tool capable of functions), but like DM93 says it's always learning. Just keep driving it as you want and it will change.

Ott tune won't change the gear hunting. I have it. It did nothing. Best thing to do is regear

I can relate to your displeasure of shift points when I first got my 2018 sport. But, being old and never ever owning a vehicle with an automatic AND electronic throttle, this was aggravating. I hit a snag while looking to get a tune so I passed on that. Then I decided I'd just learn how to drive it or sell it.

Long story short, weather in D or S mode, when I take off I feel as if I have to press the pedal more than I would in my other vehicles. So I just did it. The next thing I noticed is that with each shift I need to immediately press the pedal just slightly. The amount of the pedal press would definitely affect time to next shift. Only took a week to get my habits dialed in and now no more thoughts of selling. Wife even asked if I got the tune because she noticed the difference.
But, remember, this is coming from an old geezer.

And when the old geezer gets frustrated with all the new tech he just pulls out one of the old 4 speed 400 hp rides and goes up any mountain in site without shifting and using about 1/10'th of the throttle travel.
My moral is that it was cheaper and easier to change me than the truck.
    YMMV

And here I am a totally happy OTT recipient. No more fourth gear when it hits 20mph. No more dead spots and multi gear shifts to get into the power band.

Old metals, I agree. There should be a law against selling A.I. to folks nearing sixty, we're just incompatible coming from analog manual 4wd with birfield joints and carbeurators.

thanks DM93 "Here's a document with probably more than you ever wanted to know but it goes into great detail about how the AC60 transmission operates and how the adaptive learning works."
I had NO IDEA these things have some sort of A.I. baked in. Would have rebuilt my 2012 manual had I known.

I read the whole manual and realized my vehicle display screen is faulty. It shows PRNDLL and hides the FU at the end.

    Time to make up a bumper sticker;
Warning- this vehicle requires a Crank Starter. He's behind the wheel.

And this is all old tech by today's standards:rofl: I generally like some of the tech we have now but I agree it's getting way out of hand.
