Replace the fender flares with the black plastic ones from the TRD OR trim and you won't have to worry so much about scratched paint.

Replace or repair it correctly. A decent body shop will remove the flare and fix it and will match the texture. Its cheaper, easier to take it off than bagging the whole truck and tying up a paint booth for a small spot job that should cost $200 at most. Do it right and move on.

Yes, but I would have to paint all 4 flares.

Dupli-Color has magnetic gray. Are their matches usually pretty close?

A couple of reply's state the plastic flares on the 2017 TRD sport are textured. I'm just not seeing that. With a look at the pics you can see the gloss of the flare is just about identical to the fender. So I just went out for a close look at the truck and I'll be damned if there is any discernable texture on the fender flare.
So, needing to do this on a budget I am leaning toward pulling the flare and hitting the entire piece w/ Dupli-Color.

They are, but it's more about the painting process. You may have to paint it few times until you get a color that matches or it's close enough that you're happy with how it looks. I replaced my gas lid a few months ago and bought the dupli-color to paint it to match the truck. In the end I just decided to leave it black the way it came because I wasn't sure I could get it to match.

Fender flares, front bumper, and the front chin bumper are all textured on these trucks. Depending on the trim level depends on if they paint that part, but they are all the same textured part from the start.

The gloss you are seeing is due to the paint and clear coat washing out a bit of the texture.

Part number for the left front flare is 75872-04060, its the same no matter the trim level, its just painted on the sport and limited trims.

Make sure to get 1/4" M3 tape and clips if pulling the flare. You are gonna break clips

Thanks everybody for the help. I'll post pics when it's done. But first I've got to do lower control arms on my wife's Nissan Juke. The passenger side ball joint let go in the parking lot (luckily) yesterday.

My local shop wants over $900 to fix, trim is cracked, one clip at least broken, no other damage. Will look further for an epoxy to fix the crack. Neighbor won’t repair, too small of a repair, he is a retired body painter.

I scratched my flares soon as I got my new Taco in 2018, I took them off, and took them to line X. They coated them and gave them back. Then I ordered new tabs to mount them back on the truck. Had a body shop mount them back on, They still look great to this day and they won't scratch even with a knife.

Thanks for this picture. I have a set of factory flares that I picked up to do this for my SR and haven't been properly motivated to get them coated. Looks good.

I'd recommend simply replacing the fender. I did this to my truck. Color matched flare was $270 with all the parts pre-installed (clips & 3M tape).

Much cheaper, less hassle, a very easy one hour DIY project. Fender repaint at a body shop is way more expensive plus you won't have your truck for a while depending on how busy the shop is.

Here's my post on this in another thread:
