As you can hear, I have Meat Loaf blasting in the truck; I also had the A/C on because it was fairly warm out, and I had the wipers on because it was obviously raining. However, you seen the lights come on in the condo above Emily's when the neighbor hears us pounding on the window and screaming her name...

This is where I decided to call 911 and hauled ass back to the truck. My phone was streaming Meat Loaf via Bluetooth, and the music cuts off because I turned off the Bluetooth to call an ambulance...

While I can't relate to that exact scenario.

I can say, I've had to do a few "welfare" checks on persons I though might be dead.

Right before pulling out of my driveway...

I can be heard asking Amanda why I am shaking so bad, followed by "I hate this girl"; I can assure everybody that while mine and Amanda's relationship with Emily was very tumultuous for the last two years of her life, I did not hate her. As everybody knows, I cared enough about her that I drove to her condo in a severe storm knowing there was a high likelihood that what I found at her condo would result in me calling 911...

@stbear recently had a similar scenario with a reclusive female neighbor, brought on by reading my story. Luckily, his neighbor ended up being alive and totally fine.

Amanda knew that something was very wrong, and I really got a bad feeling once a second phone call went unanswered; Amanda and I her to literally be right on the couch, visible through a window without having to gain entry to the condo.

The cop and the ambulance showed up probably within a minute of each other. At the beginning, I can be seen directing the cop to Emily's condo, and then the paramedics come into view seconds later. The bigger guy in the yellowish green jacket is the one who kicked the door in. Though you cannot see it, about 40 seconds into the video is when the paramedic kicked in the door. About 42 seconds in is when the lights come on in the condo, and the precise moment Amanda and I get a good look at Emily. At this point, we knew she was way beyond help, and this is the moment that changed our lives forever. Unfortunately, I don't think that memory will leave either of our minds in the near future...

There was a time when “Bat Out of Hell” was always in the Taco’s CD player!

Love and hate are both very strong emotions. Sometimes it's possible to feel both about the same person or thing

Amanda won’t even watch the videos; I feel like watching them has helped me out, but my girlfriend has PTSD from shit that went down before I even met her. I wish that I would have thought to call 911 from the truck instead of bringing my phone back up to the condo. Using my iPhone in the rain resulted in temporary damage to the microphone, and the dispatcher had a hard time hearing me after a little bit.

The biggest shock of the entire night was when the lights were finally turned on, and I realized that I’d been screaming at a dead body. I knew something was wrong the moment I saw that the lights in the condo were off at barely past 8:30PM on a Saturday, especially on the day of the Kentucky Derby. Emily had a lifelong obsession with horses and would have been watching recaps of the race, and the TV being off was another clue. If the TV had been on but the lights off, and she was on the couch, then one would have assumed she died suddenly while watching TV.

If her car hadn’t been there, it would have been little less urgent, but if the Outlander was there then Emily was there. If Emily obviously hadn’t been there, we probably would have have left and come back the next day, then called the police the next morning and reported her missing. Remember, in January 2024, our old teacher’s 21-year old son disappeared while driving to his girlfriend’s house. He was found dead in his totaled car at the bottom of a hill, by police investigating a separate accident, three days later (it was really cold, so his body didn’t really decompose).

When I called Emily a second time while driving there and left a voicemail, Amanda and I both knew something had happened that would require the involvement of law enforcement and/or EMS. Amanda and I were thinking that she was in her bed, and not expecting to look through that window and see her on the couch.

I’m glad she was on the couch and not in her bed, because I would have broken in if I didn’t see her. Like I said, the Outlander was parked out front and Hannah was in the condo. Emily generally didn’t take the dog with her unless she was going to the vet, but the car was all the proof we needed.

So, no doubt I would have kicked in the door, and then we would have found her unresponsive in bed. The cop confirmed that she hadn’t started to really decompose yet, as there was no smell. The paramedic told Amanda that Emily was in full rigor, indicating that she’d been gone for probably four hours or more.

No doubt, when Emily didn’t respond to her door being kicked in and her name being screamed, we would have touched her in an attempt to rouse her. Thankfully, because of the way things happened, we didn’t have to touch Emily or even get that close to her; I’m glad, because simply seeing her through the window when the lights came on was traumatizing enough!

Emily was not a bad person at all, but traumatic brain injury she sustained in the horseback riding accident effectively deleted her social filter. That’s the best way I can describe it. She was very childlike a lot of the time and displayed behaviors that were, at times, borderline sociopathic. She never did anything violent, but she could go from being the Emily who I remembered from her late teens and early twenties to a mean-spirited and unpredictable bitch! Emily and I were both 17 when we met, and she was probably about 23 when the horse accident occurred.

Have you ever heard that song before? It’s a duet with Cher called “Dead Ringer for Love” that I believe was released in 1981. Here’s the music video…
