Lizards, snakes, cats, and now fish to keep the bugs out!

Had posted in another thread about the pond idea and I never considered a submersible until someone mentioned it. This could be beneficial as I can stand to make the pond larger, versus using up some real estate for a separate enclosure just for the filter/reservoir similar to a sump tank.

Adrian even said we could totally add a smaller setup on top to act like a waterfall and I figured I could fill it with river rock and put plants in it as well

I just need to consider ease-of-rinsing said filtration

It's the bottom 1/3 or so of a plastic 55gal drum with the pump at the bottom, a piece of round plastic cut with large 2" holes all over on top, then a thick rigid filter media and a thick soft filter media. It draws through all of that to run the waterfall. I wash them out every two weeks or so, they make an excellent bio bag really so I never shock the fish as long as I top up the pond through the top of the filter.

This is true, never have to worry about mosquitos or water skimmers, and bees learn to stay away too

Sick, yeah waterfall is totally in the works after the water is 'filtered'

I got some weird replies when I kept mentioning using some sort of tote for my DIY filtering, which sounds exactly like you did.

I'm telling you, just start catching them and encasing them in resin.

Cut them into round or square shapes and do this for a good minute until you've got a good supply and sell them!

Here I'll see a straggler of an ant and that's only if a lizard didn't get to it first

    The lizards are everywhere :angrygirl:

I'll take some pics of it all when I clean it, gotta do it this week. It's pretty simple and works well. The waterfall itself has lots of sizes of rock and sand too which works as a filter of sorts as well. I have a separate littler pump and UV chamber that I run to filter in the winter (waterfall would freeze) and keep aeration going.

The killing spray does leave them in pretty good shape, their bodies aren't getting smashed most the time unless its inside

@Kwikvette The local feed/pet shop has filter media on a roll that I just buy cuts of to make mine fit in the cutoff barrel. Having your pump exposed is harder on it, has greater access to gravel and sand the fish kick up.

That’s good, the Moscow cops are real sticklers about loud exhausts. There’s a good chance you’ll be pulled over here driving late at night if you give them any excuse cause they’re always out fishing for drunk drivers.

Your pics will definitely help - my issue is that I'm genuinely overthinking shit cause I'm on "indoor, large tank with sump tank mode" whereas really, an outdoor pond is a large body of water that requires less maintenance (I'll have very few fish in it)

I was gonna grab live rock as one of my layers (for bacteria) and use something like this between the filter media you're talking about

Outside increases the load on the filter for sure, animals/insects, plants, weather, algae (accelerated by sun load) all play a part. Weather dictates how your fish operate too, colder and less sun and they'll eat less too. I have maybe 11 or 12 koi and they're good at eating most of the algae and I hardly if ever have to feed them.

Algae, keep forgetting about that one.

Yeah that inline UV filter will help, hoping all the plants I add in help too

My red root floaters grow like crazy in my indoor tank so maybe I can toss those in; apparently koi love eating the stuff along with duckweed so maybe goldfish will too
