2015 Tacoma TRD off road manual transmission has inaccurate fuel indication. Shows empty when it has about a quarter tank and low fuel light comes on. We use the trip meter to stay safe from running out of fuel but we have to make sure we use the correct trip meter or the maintenance indicator comes on. I want to fix this fuel problem. Is there a fuel sensor somewhere besides the fuel tank? My Nissan had a sensor near the fill tube that had failed and was an easy fix. Will this problem show up as an error code on a code reader?

    That is correct.

The sending unit (for the gauge) is on the fuel pump housing.
There are no code for the sending unit.

The gauge operates off of resistance.
Most of the time it's the sending unit.
Almost never is it a wiring issue. (but it could be.....if you are really unlucky person).

Personally, every time I've seen a fuel gauge problem it was always the sender in the tank.

With the exception of Chevy, they had issues with clusters on all the trucks and suvs. But that gauge would flutter or go dead, not related to accuracy like you mentioned
