Crashnburn80's 1st Gen TRD Double Cab Build

I recently switched from Toyo Open Country AT3's (265/70/16 SL) to BFG K03's (265/70/16 D). I think they're around 55lbs? The weight increase was very noticeable at first. MPG, acceleration and stopping performance all took a hit. However, I do like them. I've put 2700 miles on them and a chunk of that was driving to Vegas from Phoenix and back (about 10 hours). They're very smooth and quiet for an all terrain in comparison to the Toyo AT3's which howled after 15k.

If C rated was an option I would have bought those for the weight savings. I'm curious to see how they do after 15k-20k miles.

 

Very disappointing, looks like there won't be any 33" tall, 15" wheel BFG AT at all pretty soon.

 

33x10.5r15 KO3 is supposed to be available in February and advertised weight is 5lbs lighter than the equivalent KO2.

I ran the AT3s on the Gladiator, lost a tire on the first off road trip. Wasn't impressed with the AT3s otherwise either compared to the KO2s, as you mention the AT3s were far louder. Certainly wouldn't buy AT3s again while I'm onto my 7th? set of KO2s.

 

I feel like my AT3s have been pretty quiet - LT255/80/17

They're over 3 years old now too, maybe around 40k miles

 

7 sets of KO2's in the PNW. Wet weather traction on city streets can be hazardous IMO. However, I think you have mentioned in earlier posts that you sell them after only a few years or was that someone else here?

My SL Toyo Open Country AT3's Have been decent for almost 4 years. Balanced nice. full depth siping, wearing even and light off roading. Have been great for PNW weather.

 

Correct, I sell them after a few years, by the time they reach 30k miles or so wet/icy weather performance is significantly degraded. Really the worst part about the tires IMO. Still lots of tread left though and such a popular tire in common Toyota sizes that they fetch a solid price secondhand which rolls into the next set of tires, so I always have newer tires on the truck.

 

Speaking of, I’m overdue to sell this set and get a new one. 11/32” left…

 

Back to the gy6.35 HIR reverse light upgrade.

Osram 25w HIRs producing 500 lumens vs stock 921 incandescents ~260 lumens. The HIR technology is so cool to drastically boost output without increasing power draw.

Problem though on the smaller 1st Gen assemblies is people report the gy6.35 bulbs melt the housings. So I used

$11 DEGEOBERLIN Adhesive Backed Aluminized exhaust heat shield tape for wall behind grill 2000 Degrees High Temp Protection Material Thermal Barrier Blanket Mat (12'' X 12'')

2000 degree exhaust adhesive heat shielding on the top and bottom of the assembly. Also increases the light reflectiveness vs dull plastic. Note the thermal protection layer installed on the assembly.

2.6x brighter output than stock, providing a massive lighting improvement. The 25w HIR bulbs are only a minor wattage increase over the stock 19w incandescent bulbs with a huge performance gain.

 

Are these direct plug and play?

And speaking of…. Based on your headlight thread I just recently bought OEM housings to replace the awful aftermarket the previous owner installed.

My question is: would putting a high quality paint protection film like XPEL (or equivalent) be a good idea to prevent fading/yellowing/pitting?

The limited info I can find online is conflicting. Some say to do it, others say it is a backnidea because the housings need to “breathe.” Just wondering what your take is.
