Emily’s dad even bought her an urn!

 

Water damage can get expensive FAST......

My mother will have been out of here house for 3 years come next month.
She had to sue her insurance company. 1 tree cost nearly 200K in water damages.

 

Luckily, the damage was minimal in this case…

 

Poor guy. He lost his daughter.
And now he has to deal with this.....wow.

Minimal damage can still get expensive.
A lot of it depends on the contractor too.
Some don't like to "repair". They want to start with new.

It's the little stuff like the missing tile on back splash that can "add up" fast.
Water damage doesn't look to be too bad judging by the wall plates and furring strips.
Looks like they got to it before any mold started. Mold is the new "cash killer".
If it looks molded, they want to replace it. Because they can use the "health" argument to get it covered.

BTW, the cost for the dehumidifiers is astronomical.
The charge by the day, per machine. And they use YOUR power.
They will set a temporary pole and box if they have too....And that's not cheap either.

 

Imagine what he'd be looking at if Amanda hadn't gotten an inkling that something was wrong on Saturday night; Emily's dad was about to fly down to Florida to take care of his sister following a knee replacement surgery. Emily's mom lives in Oregon. Emily has a couple of friends who suspected that something was wrong on Friday night and Saturday morning, but I just get this feeling that they wouldn't have had the presence of mind to check on her until Sunday or later.

Emily generally got up at about 7:30am to walk Hannah, which would have been about 13 hours before we found her. We don't think she was gone for much more than 12 hours when we found her (14-16 at the most); I am 99% sure that she spent the night in her bed, and came out to the living room sometime before 9am. She likely laid down on the couch because she wasn't feeling well, nodded off, and simply never woke up. According to what I've read online, a dead body in an air-conditioned space takes a day or two to noticeably decompose (as stated before, Emily had the A/C on). It would probably take about three to five days for things to really get nasty.

Emily's dad owns the condo and has a key, and definitely would have been there to check on her eventually. We no doubt saved him the trauma of finding his only daughter's body potentially several days after death. Because of us, all he's doing is having a doorframe repaired and throwing out a couch (the couch on which Emily died was actually at the curb today, and seeing it was tough for Amanda). The teardown revealed to me that there are two layers of simulated wood floors, and a solid concrete slab beneath them. I read that if blood and other fluids seep into concrete, the smell of death can persist even with a thorough cleaning, and significant demolition is required to remedy the situation.

Amanda and I see our own therapists at the same practice. Usually, my session is at 10:30am and Amanda's is at 11am, and that was the situation today. I came back out to the truck when I was done and was talking to my grandma on the phone when I noticed a text message from an unfamiliar number. It was group text that had been sent to both Amanda and myself; I read the text and realized that it was from Emily's mom, asking about Hannah. I initially thought that she would want Hannah and we would have to give her up...

So, Emily's parents have been divorced for over a decade and are not exactly on speaking terms; I am not going to go into detail, but there's a lot of drama. Emily's mom had been worried sick about Hannah this whole time and had been beside herself trying to reach us. When asked, Emily's dad allegedly told her mom that he did not have our phone numbers. The Horsham Police also claimed not to have our numbers. This is not true in either case. After a lot of trouble, Emily's mom finally got the numbers from her dad and called us.

We spent almost an hour on the phone with her, talking about Hannah and sharing memories of Emily. We also did a Facetime call with Emily's mom so she could see Hannah. I said this before, but here it is again...

I've known Emily since 2006; I went to her parents' old house numerous times and spent quite a bit of time with her over the years. Somehow, I never met her dad until the night we found her body, and I never met her mom until today. Needless to say, we are going to be keeping in contact with Emily's mom.

Things have gotten much better, but Amanda is struggling with the situation a lot more than me. Seeing the couch that Emily died on, being inside the condo, and taking possession of the urn containing Emily's ashes were all emotional situations. I've said it before and I will say it again; I DO NOT wish finding the dead body of a loved one on my worst enemy!

 

That's awesome that you were able to connect, does her mom live locally?

Not sure re the police, my guess is they didn't want to give your numbers out for privacy reasons..

 

Her mom lives just outside of Portland, Oregon. Also, my dad says that finding Emily’s body was a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence; I certainly hope that he is right, because I don’t think I can take finding someone else I care about deceased. I can’t even imagine what Barb’s friend went through; Barb was Amanda’s birth mother, who as you know died last February of a massive heart attack likely brought on by cocaine use. She was in her apartment for roughly five days, and her neighbors told us that even though they did not go in, you could smell the body once the door was kicked open.

The police made a mistake, in that they let Barb’s friend go into the apartment with them. Amanda and I didn’t have a choice in seeing Emily’s body, because the blinds were open and all you had to do was look through the window. As soon as the first responders kicked in Emily’s door and turned on the lights, one of them shut the blinds to keep us from seeing.

I was just inside the entrance of Emily’s condo for all of two seconds before the cop told me to wait outside, and I did not smell anything. The cop also told us that the telltale smell of death was not present.

As everybody probably knows by now, the moment lights came on and I got a really good look at my friend really sticks with me. I only saw Emily in the light for a few seconds, but it was enough time to know that Emily had departed this earth a decent amount of time prior to our arrival. Even though the blinds were shut pretty quickly, Amanda and I still got a glimpse of EMS hooking up the 12-lead EKG. I am no medical expert, and before Amanda told me what an EKG looked like, I thought that Emily could very well still be barely alive and they would be able to revive her.

Several minutes of viewing Emily through the window with the lights off doesn’t really stick with me; I literally thought she was alive, but unconscious and in medical distress, until the lights were turned on. Amanda was convinced she saw her chest rise and fall at least twice, and was also convinced that she was alive.

Amanda later told me that as soon the lights came on, she knew Emily was dead, but didn’t want to say anything until one of the first responders came out and confirmed it.

Looking back on that night, I really did know she was dead as soon as the lights came on. I just didn’t quite realize it because I’d never seen a dead body before outside of a funeral.

Barb was most certainly pretty gnarly after that many days in her apartment with the heat cranked, and I am glad that we aren’t the ones who actually found her.

Emily was pale, and her skin was yellow from what we believe as of right now to be liver failure (still no autopsy results or toxicology report), but we found probably within 12 hours of her death. She also had the central A/C on in the apartment, and even the layperson knows that a cooler environment will preserve a body much better than a warm one.
