Looking at 2016 Tacoma TRD $22K 180K. Should the mileage concern me?

Looking at purchasing a 2016 Tacoma TRD with 180K miles. The seller says it’s had all its maintenance as appropriate at their local Toyota dealership, high mileage because it was a commuter car. Has a lot of upgrades, super well taken care of. Selling for 22k, price cut from 25k. Should I be scared of the mileage? I’m looking to keep the next truck I buy for a long time and I want to buy right.

You see, or read the invoices from this “local Toyota dealership? Have to look at frame, if all rusted out. Don’t know, your call.

Price seems in line with the mileage. Since you seem concerned about buying, have a trusted mechanic look it over before you buy.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I plan on getting everything tested and looked over before I hand over a check. I’ll make sure to ask the mechanic to look at the frame too

Seems a little steep price-wise, but I'm not in the market. Assuming it's a 4x4 v6 DCSB? Maybe the price is in line.... Biggest concerns are really rust and leaks coming from anywhere. I haven't broken 100k yet. My 4cyl has a chain, so it might be a good idea to check when/if the timing belt was ever changed as well. That'll be a high dollar item to consider if your incapable of a DIY job. If there are no recent service records, I'd just figure on replacing plugs, oil, filter, front and rear diff fluid, xfer case fluid, and the paper filters. Roughly $250-500+ in stuff depending on brand and quantity. Again, if you can't DIY then that is another cost you'll have to consider. 180k is roughly the interval for all those fluids anyway.

Good luck. I love my Taco

I would pay a little more and get something with less miles and years. JMHO

There are lots of better trucks out there without 180K miles that aren't 2016s. Keep looking.

Yeah... The mileage isn't the issue .. they made some really nice tweaks in 2020.. that's what I would look for as well.. something that had all the recalls, kinks, and TSBs worked out over time .. android auto/car play and TSS radar are also standard on 2020+ models... Even on the SR utility package

If by “upgrades” you mean aftermarket doodads, they don’t add resale value, if not hurt them. If they are exactly what you want, then feel free to add to the seller’s value, but understand the rest of the market won’t.
Also, have a reputable off road shop go through it before buying.
As to known factory flaws, I’ll mention the two most costly. Coolant crossover pipe (behind engine) and from timing cover leak.

These were the leaks I was referring to on the V6 .. sorry I didn't recall what they were since I have a 4cyl, but I knew there were a couple I had read about that were not exactly easy fixes .

Third gen Tacomas don’t have timing belts they all have chains.

22k for a midsize pickup with 180k miles? I’m out.

Back in my day, a Toyota truck with 180K on the clock was a $1,500 vehicle. Man, how times have changed!

You can do better buying through a different private seller. Carvana is quoting $22,600 for my 2017 OR DCSB. It has 95k miles on it and I’m sorry, it’s not for sale.

The "good" thing of buying a used vehicle, is you are standing at the finish line picking the winners/survivors. Regardless of how it has been maintained, look for presence of common issues afflicting 3rd gens. Walk way if you see any:
    Timing cover leak
    Coolant crossover pipe leak
Steering rack seepage at the bellows
Rear diff oil leak between diff carrier and axle housing
Contaminated headliner from water leak at 3rd brake light

If it's a TRD Sport (as opposed to TRD OR), check maintenance records for vacuum pump replacement at ~120k miles. In later years (starting in either 2017 or 2018) it became a required maintenance item, but people often neglect it due to workload.
When adjusted for inflation, $1500 "back in your day" is probably more than $22k in today's debt-slavery dollars

Hard pass for me, but I'm not you at the end of the day. Add-ons are worthless, if anything decrease the value of the truck. Dealer maintenance (usually) just means the owner doesn't know what the truck needs, so they had the oil changed every 10k miles, had an overpriced air filter thrown in every now and then, and likely neglected other maintenance items needed. But you can access those records to confirm or trash that theory. At the end of the day, its a tacoma, so its probably a good truck.. But at 180k miles, its literally just a gamble to know if its going to last another 100k miles or not, and no one here can even begin to guarantee it will or won't. If finding a truck to last you a long time is top priority, I'd keep looking.

Also, "TRD" doesn't really tell us much. Is it a sport or off-road model? 2wd or 4wd? That changes things by a couple thousand dollars, give or take.

Boy, how had time have changed. I was almost ready to sign the papers on a 2016 TRDOR base 6MT in Dec 2019. I walked at the last minute because we were $900 apart on the value of my trade-in 2013 Sienna.

It had 26k miles for $26k.
