Amanda and I went to a vintage A/C collector's meet hosted by a friend of mine up in Pottsville...

Don't I have an awesome girlfriend?!?!

The primary task was to have the base pan of my 1964 EQK drilled out so water will not pool in the unit. The oldest A/C unit present at this meet was from 1948, and the newest one was from 1990. Every single unit in the pavilion was fully operational!

In the 1950s and 1960s, A/C units were not only beautiful, but they were built to last!

This is a General Electric (note the spine fin coils); GE is responsible for both the design of both the unique spine fin coils and the venerable Climatuff reciprocating compressor. GE sold its HVAC division to Trane in the early 1980s, and Trane still uses both the spine coils the Climatuff compressor. American Standard is a rebadged Trane, and these units also have these distinct features. Some Tranes have Alliance scroll compressors, even painted in the distinctive red, but Trane still uses the iconic Climatuff compressors. As stated above, they do not build things like they used to!

The 10K Frigidaire that I got was absolutely filthy, so I just scrapped it, but I'm keeping the 8K BTU one as a spare for Amanda's room. As of right now, my 1964 Emerson Quiet Kool (6,000 BTU) will be going into Amanda's bedroom window. It is smaller than the Frigidaire, but it also older and of higher quality. If the EQK ends up not being powerful enough Amanda's room, I can get at least $200 for it from a collector!

I want one of those units with the dip in the center that let you use more of your window. But I'm hesitant to get rid of my Frigidaire because it has one of the best features for a window AC... it powers up in the last mode/temp it was in when power was cut. So I can control it with a smart plug from my phone, usually I leave the plug on schedule mode but it is nice to be able to turn on the AC when coming back from a trip or whatever too

I hear that the ones with the dip in the center are rather troublesome in terms of reliability, and also that they are more difficult to install than traditional window A/Cs. This is why I prefer central A/C...

My house isn't a good candidate for central A/C, not without a major renovation.
