I’ve been a tech for close to 20 years, sadly you’d be surprised how many times I’ve been complemented about my spelling and punctuation. I’d submit my write ups and the service advisor would say “man, I just love when I get your write ups. I basically just copy and paste them”. I’m definitely not a grammar expert but the bar is pretty low these days.

You might think this is funny... but I had a customer bring in a rotor like that and want me to turn it.

Years ago I had a client bring a BMW 3 series in for a check engine light. I took their info, asked some questions related to the issue and sent them out the door. Shortly after they left I went to pull the vehicle in. I put my foot on the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. I tried pumping them up and they didn’t respond one bit. I decided to start the car in neutral and then bump it in and out of drive real quick, I just wanted to see if they’ll hold at all. I literally had to ride the brakes on the floor just to idle into the shop. I was shocked they didn’t mention anything and I have no idea how they even drove to the shop. Turns out the left rear rotor was worn just like that photo and it got so bad the caliper blew out. IMG_4576.jpg

Sure, and check your blinker fluid too, and don't forget to check that muffler bearing.

People that think brake fluid is "good for the life of the vehicle" are fucking insane

The amount of frugal-ness on this site is terrifying

Is this a joke? Brake fluid has a service life of 36 months...

Between people refusing to replace rotors (they also have a minimum thickness) and saying doing a brake fluid change is overkill, I'm worried sharing the roads with other Tacomas

Imagine your are shopping for a used car.

One owner has a moderate stack of maintenance receipts

The other owner proudly tells you "I've never changed the brake fluid once on this vehicle"

    Which would you choose?

Lol I lubricate my front brakes every 20k to avoid squealing. I use Permatex copper antiseize to shorten the drying time between coats. Add a few drops to the brake fluid reservoir and you'll never have to change the fluid for the life of the vehicle:

Blows my mind how people let it get that bad. You'd think the atrocious noises would urge them to stop driving the vehicle but nope. I helped my uncle replace the rear brakes on his truck awhile back for the exact same reason.

Its like wtf guys, come on, you're going to get yourselves and/or someone else killed. "Not having the money to fix it" isn't an excuse, as there's always ways around that.

I've used a similar example to illustrate which car to buy. If you are looking at two identical cars with similar high milage... would you buy the one with several receipts for replaced parts or one that only has receipts for oil changes?
    My answer?
Why would I buy a lemon?

The presence of replaced parts does not equal a lemon. It means the owner gives a shit

A lemon is a vehicle that needs a lot of repair at low mileage, not high mileage

All cars break eventually. Some people fix problems and maintain the vehicle, some people don't
