I started checking under my Taco's the hood every time I get gas, like I used to do with my oil burners.

So my update would be that the new oil cap is staying tight. Replaced it couple months ago at an oil change and still tighter than a crabs ass.
    Time will tell.

Good to know, thanks. Just called the stealership and the parts guy said it’s “not uncommon” for Tacomas to lose their fill cap. Not an issue with other models though for some reason. Fucking thing is $55 though! Gotta love that Canadian pricing.

I have an ‘08 & ‘20 Skinner in yard. As well as a ‘16 Tundra and two other classic Yotas.
This is first time I’ve ever come across an oil cap issue on a Toyota.

Very interesting that oil cap(s) are still reported missing.

Even before I replaced the OEM cap with the TRD cap, there was never an issue with my cap vibrating off prior to replacement.

It's good to do periodic engine bay checks...like when tanking up...which I can start doing.

I do a walk-around my truck at gas station fill-ups, checking tire caps are secure and looking for wear/tear of tires & hopefully not finding nails pierced into the rubber.

Just a little PM (Preventative Maintenance) for the exterior of the truck.

First I’ve heard of it as too. It’s odd because the fill cap is usually extremely tight when I take it off, so I’m not sure what is causing them to just fall off.

Doesn’t exactly look like a $50 part, but here’s the part number for future missing caps. Parts guy did need my VIN because there are apparently a few different part numbers for the caps though.

I have a ‘23 and my oil cap has self loosened at least 3 times now in 20k miles. The first time it happened I thought it was the dealership too, but it keeps happening. I just checked the tightness last week and it was good, checked today and it was barely hanging on.

Nervous to really crank down on it because I did that after the first time and it skipped a thread like someone else mentioned. This is a straight thread so we should be able to tighten it down and bottom out on the gasket, but the plastic filler neck just deforms and skips a thread if you do.

I live in a particularly dusty environment, so the thought of driving around with no cap makes me nervous.

For those having the oil cap loosen, maybe try taking a dry rag to the threads on the cap and filler neck. Oil on the threads may contribute to the loosening.

May I ask you to inspect the o-ring on the cap. Is it securely fastened to the cap or is it loose, i.e. would it take a pick to remove the o-ring or could you remove it with your finger nails? I ask because my cap always has stayed on with no problems, and the o-ring would be very hard to remove.

Opened the hood to access the battery to jump another vehicle. Immediately noticed the oil filler cap was gone. Could not find it anywhere. Found this thread and ordered a new one from Amazon, which I plan to attach a tether to prevent it from happening again.

I’m still at a loss as others are as to why they are coming off. A couple of times the rubber seal stayed on the filler neck when I took off the cap. I just snug the cap and not bear down on it and so far it has not fallen off or been loose. I also put the cap with my key fob when changing my oil so I don’t forget it. I like the idea of tethering it to something though. But it just seems odd.

Probably an issue with the polymers in the plastics. They can shrink and expand. I had a gas cap on a chainsaw that would expand and you could barely get it off. Moisture and heat also come into play.

Your post and post #78 causes me to have a new theory that can explain quite a bit. The seal stays on the fill tube and then gets rubbed off during the fill process and this is not noticed, then the cap goes back on and then since there is no rubber seal it vibrates off.
