I have not been down there in years. When I lived in VB, I used to head to OBX regularly. I want to drive down the end of Hatteras and take the ferry to Ocracoke. Then from Ocracoke to the mainland and go home.

This is my old 85 truck somewhere on Hatteras Island in the '80s.

That’s a cool pic! The ferry ride is fun. I haven’t done the one from Ocracoke to mainland tho.

I go to OBX twice a year, every spring and fall. Sometimes the mosquitoes aren’t bad at all, other times they will attack you like killer bees. If it’s cool and the wind is blowing, they aren’t bad. If it’s warm and muggy with a light breeze….better have a hazmat suit! They were so bad at Ocracoke one time, we had to spray the door of the house with Off to keep them from coming inside.

I have a little place in Hatteras, been going there since I have been a kid.

Long time since I went to the Black Beard festival.

They sure are fun, especially on some light tackle. Delicious too!

I’ll be visiting the outer banks in a couple weeks and wondering about a beach pass to drive on it.

What should I know about the beaches down there and where can we see the wild horses?

Looks like I should stick to Corolla beach for the horses and parking passes are $50 but driving on the beach is free.

-I do have recommended equipment and have driving on beaches before. Though I have 285/75/16 tires now and had 255/85/16 last time I was on a beach.

Yes, Corolla is where you’ll see the wild horses. Gotta order your parking pass in advance as the sales are limited. Your parking pass will have the rules to follow.

As long as you air down BEFORE you hit the sand, you shouldn’t have any issues driving on the beach.

If you plan to visit the Cape Hatteras Seashore, you’ll need a separate pass to drive on the beach there.

    From a couple weeks ago:

Thanks and great pics! Since I posted I went to read more and seeing you confirm I could drive on the Corolla beach but need the permit to park. I’ll still try and get a packing permit since it says they’re limited to 300 a week.

I’ll probably only plan on the Corolla beach this time but did see, like you said, I’d need passes for the other beaches.

I’ve got air down caps and an inflator, in case the air provided is filled with water.

Nevermind about the packing permit, sold out for the week I’ll be there

Yep you got it! You can drive on it all day but soon as you park, you’re required to have a parking pass. For what it’s worth, I’ve never been checked. That said, Police do patrol the beach.

    Have a great time!

Does the NPS Access Card apply for this Parking Permit?

Great Smokey Mountains has a new "Parking Permit". It's a way around the Entrance Fee they can't initiate. If you don't park, no problem.
Access Card does not work in GSMNP. Arg!

I don’t know for parking at Corolla but I know it doesn’t work for Cape Hatters or Cape lookout. I’ll have to read more for Corolla.
