It looks like the door catch thing didn't break, it was the ears on the mount on the door itself. Is there any danger in welding a sheetmetal piece behind it to strengthen it, will we melt import things?

^Remove the interior door panels and moisture barrier and take a look?

Does your window still go up and down through its full range of motion? On 2nd gens a door catch overload often bends the window track as well.

    thats nuts!!!
    stock?
    offroad beast?
200lbs sound deadener in the door?
    not talking shit, genuinely curious.....

Got nothing to lose by installing a re-inforced backer plate & get some welds on it...
vs finding another door, paint, etc...

might not be able to though cuz the "stay"
But worse case, the door want open all the way by 1-8" - 1/4" of how ever thick metal you can get away with.

Was the door hard to open?
My guess would be stay is seized putting excessive force on the mounted area.
Is that grease you applied or theyre just suppose to look like that?
    I have no idea...

Wow. It must have been some extreme force applied to it to crack it like that.

Thats actually quite common unfortunately. All it takes is a gust of wind or a careless person to "throw" the door open and it'll pop the metal.

I've seen it on lots of different vehicles, not just toyota

You might start thinking about it haha

That can be a pain to fix properly. Even with reinforcement and welding it'll probably never be the same. It'll pop and shift around when opening the door. Shit will be rubbing inside when you try to roll the window down, etc..

Everything else on the door works fine. Seems like buying a whole door is overkill...unless, of course we screw it up trying to weld it. We'll give 'er a shot and see what happens. I don't think the door had bad things happen to it really. The rest of truck leads a life offroad weekly, but the door is okay (I think).

These door check/cracking issues have me wondering if I could slip a washer under that nut for more engagement with the door. Looks like theres plenty of threads left. It was touched on briefly in the thread I linked above.
    Probably overthinking/overkill as I’m ought to do…
What’s the consensus TW fam? I expect a hearty amount of flaming

Yes but you want something wide as possible....
You will have to play & see what's out there, I know they make larger diameter "fender washers" but may be too wide....
Theyre thinner so even of the rest on the curved section, may not matter much.

I figure anything wider than the flange nut already on there would be an improvement eh? Idk… I’m a cheapskate and a bit of a hardware hoarder so I’ll dig around and see what I have.
    Thanks for the input!

Washer under the nut i.e. on the near side of the door sheetmetal does nothing. You'd need a doubler plate sandwiched between the door check and door sheetmetal. Take measurements. You might find something at the hardware store lol:

That’s not true! It would give me false sense of security and also hide any cracks that develop

You’re totally right though. The check is trying to pull through the door from the inside. Fml… Well I’ll revisit this if I ever peel the door skins for whatever reason
