I would want to live there if it weren't for all the damn Yankees. There are some fucking beautiful places in Florida - all of which have been ruined by people.

I hate the damn things

    which reminds me...

    Story Time with Gritto :)

Anywhere you have grain storage or livestock feed (like on a farm), you're gonna have rodents.
Our barn cats had to work for a living.
All they got was milk tank rinsing and bone meal.
That's better than it sounds, because in those days unprocessed bone meal had marrow in it.

Anyway, every Spring the silo had to be cleaned out.
By then the remaining silage was getting pretty moldy.
It was also heavily soiled by rats.

The hired hand Zook (young Amish guy) would get in there with a pitchfork, the kind with several tines closely spaced.
He'd clear away the nasty old silage through the cleanout door, which would stir up the rats.
I always wondered how they got in there in the first place, but they did.

Zook would skewer any he could and others would try to escape out the door.
Outside my Mom and Dad would be waiting with pitchforks to clear the silage away from the door.
You didn't necessarily have to skewer the rats, you could just stun them... Bap!
The barn cats would do the rest.

That was another thing I wondered about... how did those cats know?
Anyway, they knew the drill, and sure enough there would be a half dozen or so ready and waiting.
Lots of rats escaped, of course, but I guess it gave my Dad some satisfaction :notsure:

I've always liked cats, and now maybe you can understand why :)
Our barn cats were in no wise pets, but some were quite friendly nevertheless.
