Me too. My dad had 55 gal barrels with holes for drainage. Kept uncovered. Family usually filled up two a week. Seagulls had no fear back then. And we were miles away form the ocean.

    Evening all:

Thunderstorms are rolling through our area with heavy rain and flash flood warnings.

Been playing around making a simple workbench, there's nothing simple about making a simple workbench though!
Yesterday I measured 90" THREE different times, cut 2 boards at 90" and they were way too short ????, put my reading glasses on and that darn 80" mark sure looked like 90" inside the garage without the glasses, I blame it on poor lighting!

Funny when you were a kid the dump never smelled too bad. Maybe a little odd. Now........wait we don't have dumps anymore. :wah:

I try to get anything that might be usable I don't want into the hands of someone who might want it. I had lots and lots of old bicycle parts from my years of racing, training and club riding. I have used Craigslist for bigger items but all the little stuff, handle bars, pedals shifters etc I took down to the Bike Church in town. It is a place where folks in need can go and work on their bikes, get free parts and even maintenance advice.

When I started cleaning up the old 1959 Hercules, I made an attempt at removing the brake levers to clean them up; bad move, the tiny bolts securing them to the handlebars snapped. I poked around on fleabay for a while and decided instead of trying to find serviceable period correct brake levers, I'd buy some new levers for a mountain bike. I'll keep the original levers so if/when I have the old girl restored, I'll have them reconditioned and somehow figure out how to get my hands on those four little nuts and bolts; in the meantime I'll just have to suffer the indignity of riding a 1959 vintage bike with 2025 vintage brake levers. Oh the Horror!

I know one guy that has been hating this holiday for decades. As a ten year old he and a friend were pounding match stick heads into an iron pipe. ( trying to pack it tight I guess). Well while he was holding the pipe and his friend was slamming the insides. Kaboom, it exploded taking fingers from both hands with the explosion.

    Morning all:

    HAPPY 4th!

I had the same thing happen making "rockets", by some miracle I didn't suffer any major injuries!
I used to cut the tips off of paper book matches and stuff them into aluminum tubes with fins on them, those "rockets" were essentially pipe bombs but on occasion I did manage to get a successful flight!

I know a guy who lost most of his fingers on one hand while loading a muzzleloader, he fired it and almost immediately after firing he dumped powder from a flask down the barrel. There must have still been a hot ember in the barrel which ignited the stream of powder and followed it back to the flask, which then blew up in his hand. :(

Remember when we could buy M-80s? Me and the guys I hung around with built a cannon from a pipe and a pipe T, with a hole drilled in it for the fuse, and we'd load it with a marble. I wasn't there when they put one through a car door that was driving by. But I would have been there if I could have, so I was lucky. No one went to jail, but some parents were not happy.

Prep work is done. Flipping ribs wrapped in foil every hour @ 200 degrees ( grill) bbq rub. Nothing fancy. Hit it with sauce for the last ten minutes. Should take four hours.
Prime rib marinating in Italian dressing. Burgers dawgs and kielbasa round off today’s fare.

Happy Independence Day. God Bless America :oldglory: Greatest country in the history of the world!

We’re having friends over today and grilling hamburgers, fresh sweet corn on the cob and potato salad.
Just a word of caution, take good care of your pets today, keep them close and keep them safe. Many pets are intensely afraid of fireworks and loud firecrackers. Many escape , run away and are lost. Take care of them, keep them close.
