Not to sidetrack but I've always marveled at paint deterioration. I see 2nd gen tacos, even 3rd gen tacos with mucked up clear coats, rusting roofs and hoods but turn to my 23 year old truck and laugh at some of those others looking at my white 040 double cab. Paint still looks great, no signs of peeling or oxidizing through at all. Now those forest green tacos... OUCH.

The frames are a known problem. They are tubular and hollow. They can rust from the inside out. Driving on salted roads causes this.

    Frank,

I don't have a similar story. Maybe a poll question would get you better results.
I have a '97 with 272K miles on the body and what I assume is the original frame. A previous owner replaced the engine.

I have an 03 that had the frame replaced, two years ago I safe t capped the front, next month I'll be doing the mid. It's a standard cab and the problems end at the front leaf mount. Only have 150k on it, 2.7 5 speed is my daily and still towing my boat an hour up and down the mountain.

I have a 2003, TRD, 4x4, MT, extracab, that I purchased new in 2003 in Up State NY (rust belt). 2011 I moved to San Antonio TX, the dealer in SA offered to buy the truck back or replace the frame. I had the frame replaced by the dealership. My truck is always garaged and the replacement frame is rust free. Of course its lived in Texas since the frame replacement so no salt on the roads.

OP, did you not see rust starting and take preventative measures? I assume you never look under your truck until it’s rusted beyond repair.

It seems the 01 - 04 are the most problematic....

If you have those years, watch it like a hawk

If you buy those years.....inspect carefully before buying.

I chassis paint the frame, differential, axle, and dust covers every few years.

And get the long straws off ebay and fluid film inter frame channels...

And since the replacements were made same time same place .....same problem....

Frank, what "agent" are you talking about? And why on earth did said agent encourage you to gather the troops rally to reopen an ancient case on a vehicle that is no longer manufactured, and for which all previous warranties and recalls have expired?

Knew about the severity of the problem at least 2.5 years ago

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/unidentified-part.791500

Couldn't connect the dots that ferrous metal, when exposed to a corrosive agent, will rust and that the rest of the truck is made of the same metal as the first frame and the rotted tubes he's holding in that thread.

Toyota would replace upto 15yrs out from mfg date....

    so '04's expired in 2019........

Word is there are still frames in some of the most north states dealers inventory stock,
but for some reason they dont want to part with them

and just like warranty replacement engines, they dont warrant them or the replacement frames

Oh, you too, eh? Who else is on Frank's scold list? The rust is moving faster than Frank in this battle.

I’m not sure what his deal is ,but you would think after the first replacement he would have been all over it . But again who knows what this truck even looks like . In the end of the day it’s 20 plus years old, and if you keep things that long you need to be really on it

Many who buy a toyota believe its one and done.....

never maintain or replace anything until failure

they are definitely allergic to VVT engines.....

.......reason you want to be real careful buying a used Titan.....

Why do you think rust is measured in miles? Rust never sleeps.

What information do you have on improved frames?
