i rarely ever use my A/C. It seems that if i turn on my defroster and set it to cold it blows out nice and chilly. I don't understand why, but i like it.

The second gens' turn the A/C on with defrost, I'm not sure about a '98, but it could have been changed just on your truck though. If you were curious, then while the truck is running, turn the defrost on and see if the clutch pulls in on the A/C compressor.....you may use your A/C more than you realize...:)

I did it again. Got tired of paying truck payments and gas and traded in for a 2015 Honda Accord Sport since I enjoyed my 2013 Sport so much.
At least in AZ it's dry heat (I think).

Down here in Texas it can be 105F with a humitidy of 80%. That's murder.

It probably turns the AC unit on but doesn't illuminate the AC button on the dash.

none except for crappy hub caps and floor mats.
Bingo. The AC compressor has a clutch on it that only engages at a higher speed. So when you're starting the truck, the AC isn't actually engaged.

i always turn everything off before i turn off the truck each time...a/c, radio, etc...then when you start the truck again i turn it all back on after it is started...it may not be much but it seems like it would put extra electrical strain on the battery when starting....i dunno ..it probably doesn't even matter but it's something i've always done...lol

not to many, love it the way it is

my 09 uses the ac during defrost. I always feel the cold air coming out of the vents for a little while when I switch from defrost mode back to the floor/dash mode

I do turn off the a/c before shutting down the engine, I also run the fan on high after cutting off the ac to clear the duct system and then cut the fan back down to low so as not to get blasted full force when I crank the truck, I am usually asleep in the morning when going to work and the fan full force is to much, lol

Why bother turing it off before you crank it up? The compressor clutch shoulnd't be getting any fire when the ignition is in the start position. Most vehicles I've worked on won't engage the clutch, or even the fan, until the key is returned to the on position. Is the Taco different?

now i'll turn it off..... the ac clutch failed 25 km before warranty ran out....... the tech confirmed that the ac clutch cycles every time u start... something to do with air pressure, temp settings..., so anyways, happy that it was covered under warranty.
