Where did you mount your fire extinguisher?

any thoughts on the element50 fire extinguisher sticks? do most of you not trust them that you'd rather deal with a pressurized vessel?

I have this In all my cars and In the kitchen as well . I used one on someone’s engine fire on the freeway and it worked great . And his insurance paid for mine plus another because I used mine without thinking twice about it .

 

Bracketed to the softopper rail.

 

Based on my experience on a car fire, if you are set on the element, get the 100. I personally do not care for the 50.

 

I don't know why folks just don't use the small space behind the rear seat on either side near the doors. It is almost like it was designed to hold a standard size fire extinguisher (maybe it was). And there is no way it can become a projectile with it being contained by the rear seat backs. Great solution and zero extra coin needed to implement.

 

Would you care to elaborate more? I assume the hood was closed and the stick was able to project enough retardant through the grill and radiator?

 

I was able to pop the hood and the owner held it opened , it wasn’t huge but non the less it stopped more damage

 

I see. I think a reasonable position if it is too big to open the hood, it is a lost cause anyway.

 

Only time I ever used mine was when I stopped to help another motorist whose car was on fire....when I walk into a room everyone knows I'm an engineer...the guy with belt and suspenders

 

I agree. I have carried one back there for years. Not super easy to get to in an emergency but I figure if the inside of my truck is on fire, I've got way bigger problems than finding the fire extinguisher. haha

 

I'll tell you where mine is: in my kitchen. Have you ever had a half-burned up truck? Trust me, you don't want one. If you're insured, let it burn. It's quite a sight. However, if you are going to have a fire extinguisher, have a big one. I am attaching a pic of what happened to my 1988 Chevrolet van in 1990 when the catalytic converter caught some transmission fluid on fire at 2 am in Tennessee (at least I think that's what happened). I was pulling a trailer going 70 mph when I realized that "all that light" was a fire. And I had a fire extinguisher! I got most of my gear out, but not the 1980 Moto Guzzi that was inside the van. Boom!

 

You said it Exactly, Have a Big One. I see pictures on here on a lot of those little 2 LB Extinguishers. If you don't catch it when it's small you might as well throw it at the truck and walk away. Get a good 5LB at least and a bracket so during a wreck it isn't flying around. You made an investment in buying your truck, Make an Investment and Get a Good Extinguisher.

 

I think you hit the nail on the head with the little 2lb units. Better than nothing, but not by much.

That's the biggest reason I'm a fan of the Element extinguishers - even the little E50 is 50 seconds discharge time. I carry two, one on each front seat trim panel immediately inside either door.

 

The Element Extinguisher is not much better. We lit a car off for training one night to see how it performed and it didn’t do much. Followed it up with a 10 lb dry chem and the fire went out.

 

Interesting. Ive seen a lot of videos of people testing the Element, and all seem to do well.

Also Id love to meet anyone whos carrying a 10lb in / on their truck..

 

Of course they do. A lot of videos show things working that don’t work in real world environments. We tested it to see if it would work and it failed. By the way I carry a 5lb and 10lb in my truck bed as well as fire gear and a brush rake. I like being prepared.

 

Pretty sure that guy is a firefighter, so you might should take his word for it.

 

Over 44 years now. I bought one just to see how well it did with an actual engine compartment fire. It didn’t. I was in full gear and SCBA so I could get up close so it’s not like I was too far away for it to be effective.

 

That really sucks.
