I actually have a jeep now. Imagine that.
I was cleaning out the garage today and was in the process of moving some plywood when the idea hit me. I decided to take the plywood and utilize the bed rails to make a bed cover. It's not water tight or anything but for 15 bucks in materials (15/32 thk plywood, black spray paint) I decided to give it a shot. Works well as an emergency when it starts raining and you got stuff in the bed.

    photo-1_a7691ab9a4b3bc34a5b6e9a5409a7796f0bed362.jpg

Theres the finished product. You can see that in the back I had to cut another sheet to cover the whole bed so i decided to put two gate hinges on there as an easy access cover (weren't installed in the picture).

Heres a cut I made so that my cb antenna will fit while the plywood fills up the rails.

This following picture shows the only tricky part, which was still an easy cut, just had to use a jig.

    photo3_904f706ff176df3f346d1ce55aead4e513965499.jpg

And the following one is showing off my new TW sticker!

    photo2_8435e5b173909449ee1e0989de6d07c4e2f0bc6f.jpg

Sorry if this idea has already been posted but I figured I'd share my idea with my friends!

P.S. Sorry for the picture quality. Photobucket automatically resized them.

they're nice - more yellow than the standard fogs and yellow bulbs. I need to aim them down a bit as they're almost on the level of my heads... oops... :D

Yeah I agree. I am moving this saturday and the tonneau I ordered is on back order. Supposed to rain the whole way i drive so I needed something. In no way would I say this is permanent. If i wanted it to be permananent I would use another matherial and Seal it, prime it, Paint it....etc. I may take some plastic tomorrow and staple it on and wrap it.

Get a tarp a little bigger than the wood and a couple of bungie cords to tighten the tarp around the wood. And like another poster said - use some pipe or door insulation around the edges to help keep the water out.

not a bad idea. However, in my experience tarps and vehicles don't mix well. THey are like the foreskin of the devil when your driving.

Very true... sure you had to remind me of my "parachute / drag chute" from a trip last year...

Wasn't sure how it would do if snugged down around a piece of wood though.

Whatever you do, have a safe trip.

thanks for the wishes. I'll let everyone know how it did after a rainy trip. I'm expecting about 4 hours of rainy driving on it. Can't wait to get my real tonneau though!

Thinking of doing an mod of this mod, did the plywood rattle between the rails going down the highway?

That shows ingenuity. Good on you for a good low cost fix for a problem.

Did you read what the OP posted, or just scanned it quickly and made a snide comment? He wrote: "Works well as an emergency when it starts raining and you got stuff in the bed."

Personally I think he did a great job in making a impromptu cover. He did NOT state that this is a long term solution, or that he saved $1000 by not buying a Leer/ARE/SnugTop.

I remember welding 1" steel on our HUMVEEs in Iraq because their wasn't enough armor to protect us from explosives etc. Some would say that our crude welding/mods were "ghetto", but it was an immediate solution to an existing problem. Our guntrucks looked like a scene out of a Mad Max movie.

Great job OP. Pay no attention to the keyboard naysayers.

a war zone / military equipment is a bit different than public roads and a 2nd gen tacoma pickup truck... apples and oranges there.

i read the whole post. Regardless of how its sandwiched/attached into the bed rails, i would not want to be the vehicle behind him on the highway (or any road for that matter) when that thing goes flying. but to each their own! :) cheers!

wow, blast from the past here.

I had to move the next day, rain was happening, things couldn't get wet. That was the extent of its use. I bought a brand name cover anyways.

Your argument can be applied in the same manner to whatever is used as a bed cover. Wood is a whole lot sturdier than tonneau leather!

and to the guy who asked about rattle. No, it didn't move at all. It was forced in place to begin with and the down force from the wind would hold it in place as well.
