I had a small load of limbs with my tail gate down. When I went to back up the truck would lock up and not move. Is this something I can change in settings, I can't find anything.

Is the truck 4X4? If you're in 4X4 on a surface with good traction and try to move the truck in anything other than a straight line it puts the drivetain in a severe bind. Forcing the issue will break something. 4X4 is only for places with very poor traction.

In this case, it's the brake assist/collision avoidance kicking in.

Need to temporarily disable PKSB in settings.
I think selecting "TWO HAUL" mode on the mode switch will work also.

There must be a way around it, because they sell bed extenders like my OEM one, which means the tailgate has to be down.

Hope I can find a truck with out parking sensors if I ever find myself shopping for a 4G. The F-150 I have has rear parking sensors I haven't tried backing up with the tailgate down, I haven't heard anyone complain about not being able to back with the gate down.

you can turn it off in the dash same as you can turn off lane departure, etc.

it should be a button on the dash like it is in our rubicon (and while we're at it there should also be a button to turn off the qi charger...) but oh well. i dont drive around with the tailgate down enough for it to be super annoying.

I'd rather not have to deal with it at all. I don't want to turn stuff off everytime I'd be backing with the gate down, or what ever the last issue was with backing related to the sensors. Won't ever need to recalibrate the sensors because some one taps your bumper. I didn't want them on the truck that has them but I'm sure it was lumped into the package needed to get tow mirrors.

    Edit

Toyota is putting too much crap on these trucks that I don't want.

i get not wanting them at all but if you turn them off they're off. it's not like the truck turns them back on every time you start it.

Or Toyota can build a SR Xtracab 4x4vwith out the upgraded package and I won't be spending money on something I don't want. That makes more sense to me. They can take that stupid auto start stop off while they are at it.

    Edit

Someone was complaining about having to recalibrate the sensors after adding the ARB rear bumper.

I think everyone else has already answered your question but I’ll add that the Owners Manual is a good resource. This topic is detailed starting about page 335.

I have a love hate relationship with these systems. The parking brake automation is freaked out by my cluttered garage.

The tailgate camera is part of the collision avoidance system too.
I was hauling some tree limbs and one of the limbs was blocking the camera. When into full brake mode.
    I turned that feature off.

I have backed up my SR5 4x4 with the tailgate down a few times. No issues other than the disorienting backup image from the camera looking straight down.

Wife's car does that too. Some times the angle of the sun and angle of the driveway make it lock up and not back out. I have to disable all of the nannnies to get'er to move.

FYI, only the 2WD come with the stop/start system. 4WD do not have it. Easy way to confirm, look at dealership photos online of the interior. If it has S/S it will be the last button on the right in the row behind the shifter. I have 2WD and I bought the disabler. Took all of three minutes to install.
