Keep in mind that you can go to a body shop of YOUR choice, not some shitty chain the insurance company prefers

most "shitty chains" guarantee repairs for life. i have seen far more horror stories of someone going to a SOC and them fucking up the repairs, charging higher labor rates for no reason and then the insureds getting mad we could not tell their SOC to make it right because we did not have any type of contract with them.

That’s fair, I do have a close family relationship with a high-end body shop so I might have a skewed view.

Agreed, just saying Toyota may look at the frame as a crumple point to save lives in an accident.

Amazing how force that spare tire took. Seems like it would have been much worse if the spare wasn't there.

I bet they could fix the frame bends since it took a massive bend on each side behind the spare tire. It looks like Toyota wanted the frame to bend there in that way to minimize damage and still be strong enough to pull a 6000 pound trailer.

By looking for the hitch receiver in the pictures it looks like pics are passenger side and driver side. I'm not sure the spare took a hit. The OP might want check cab and bed gap.

What vehicle hit you? How fast/hard was the hit? Any pics of the other vehicle?

I got rear-ended by a Lincoln Continental in my ‘89 pickup. It bent the hitch inward a couple inches and folded down like yours. Back then, that was a basic run-of-the-mill frame straightening job. No big deal.

Nowadays, the truck is toast. :(

The frames crush zone did exactly what it was engineered to do minimize injuries.

Trailer hitches dont do frames/vehicles any favors in rear end accidents. It actually damages the frame/structure worse. Looks like thats what happened to your truck, the hitch caused more frame damage than it wouldve if you didnt have the hitch installed.

    ^This.
Plus I don’t see any damage to the plastic bumper parts. Looks like the OP backed into something or someone hit him very low. Looks to me that without the hitch there whatever it was would have ridden under the frame.

It’s illegal in many countries to drive with one in when not towing. Seems like good practice

pretty sure they mean you're not supposed to have a hitch mount/ball if there's not a trailer hooked up to it.

not just having the receiver bolted to your frame with 4+ class 10 bolts.
