    Great right up!!

I have a Mexico made Tacoma and I've always wondered why it had the extra cooling fan. Was it factory or installed by the previous owner . I couldn't find the info anywhere. But, you answered a long unanswered question for me

Thank you, and thank you for an amazing write up!!

Being that yours is a second gen, I’m not sure those had a TSB available. You might have got one that was at one point destined for Mexico. Only trucks headed to Mexico get the fan by default. Either way, that’s neat that you got it.

I bet that all trucks destined for Costa Rica get the fan, too. However, they didn’t start installing the e-fan until 2010ish, so that would explain why @caribe makaira doesn’t have one and you do, since his is an ‘06.

I'm not completely sure. But, its possible that 2nd gens made in Mexico were also sent to Central America, and were configured with the same auxiliary A/C cooling fan. But, I'm just guessing at that.

Well, made in Mexico doesn’t mean anything. Tons made in Mexico go to the us. However, I bet the ones destined for Mexico go to Costa Rica.

very nice write -up. I'm going to mention this next stealership visit! what's the best way to go about getting them to honor this TSB? Do I mention it if they don't know about it?

Best thing you can try is to tell them that it stops cooling or AC shuts off when idling while it’s hot out.

Read the TSB, it explains what the service tech is looking for to diagnose the need. If I recall it is in slow moving traffic, that the AC blows warm air.

The TSB also includes some baffling to plug holes in the radiator support, to stop air from going around the radiator.

I looked at the TSB, and refused to let my dealer get that deep into my truck, so went to purchase all the items. The dealer returned comment the next day that Toyota refused to sell me that individual parts, unless I provided my vin and reason for the purchase. I feared this would void my warranty, so I searched out the pins, and made my own harness, and installed it myself.

My major issue, was on a hot day, when the first mile was a very slow trek, there was no AC till I got to open road, engine was cold, so the engine fan was off, but the AC needed a fan. I also appreciate and blocked off all the holes and added a baffle down low, to force air to go through the radiator, instead of bypassing it. Made a big difference.

    OP, Extremely NICE Write-up!!

I see, I did notice the TSB only includes 2016-2020 model years… I have a 23, so I’m not sure if they’ll do this for me.

    @caribe makaira maybe.

I wanted to do it that way (like stock) but felt like it was going to be too much work to hide the wiring coming out of that box.

I can deal with the wiring. Things have changed with the parts though. Can’t buy the individual pieces of the fan anymore, you have to buy the assembly. There’s 3 different part numbers for the fan, but they all overlap years. The packings, seal and wiring harness are NLA, so you have to build your own. If I have to build my own, then I want to use crimped connectors, not pigtails. I’m attempting to do this on my 2022 - A/C sucks in high ambient temperatures while stopped.

Who are you trying to buy the individual pieces from? I went with Sparks Parts for mine after Toyota Parts Deal cancelled half of the order due to backorder status. Purchased on 06/06/24 and received on 07/25/24. I actually purchased from Sparks first, and while waiting seemingly forever for the order, I decided to try TPD, but they cancelled within the same day due to the backorder status. So I kept waiting from Sparks and eventually it all showed up in one order.

If you need to buy the fan assembly as one single part, it is the part number in my first post: 88590-35050. That is the fan assembly that comes in the Mexico spec Tacomas. That is pretty expensive though. Not sure this swap is worth $750 plus shipping/tax/all other materials to install it.

I never tried to buy the wiring harness because it didn't really make sense to me to do so - it was overpriced, it was a true TSB part (so I figured I wouldn't have luck anyways), and finally, with the MT Off-Road and Pro, we have a clutch reservoir mounted where the add-on relay box goes anyways, so overall it made 0 sense for me to pursue that option.

If I were you, I'd just build your own harness with a simple Bosch 4 pin relay from Amazon or similar...grabbing 12 gauge power from the battery, ignition from either the factory condenser fan relay box or the MBECU (I did the MBECU), and then the relay ground trigger at the AC amp.

I was ordering from BAM. Part number for the fan assembly for my 2022 is 88590-35051, also listed for Mexican built tacos. I’m ok with the cost of the TSB harness, but was told it was NLA, along with the packings and seal. If I make my own harness, I’m sourcing USA made automotive primary wire from Sherco Auto.

I do have a question about your write-up though. On the J/B pin 16, you spliced the connection to the existing wire. In the TSB, they splice the connection to pin 32 and leave the original wire disconnected, folding back onto itself and taping it to the harness. Was there an issue leaving that wire disconnected or am I missing a detail?
