In our area we have really good luck with a mixture of winter rye, triticale and some brassicas mixed in, we use rape, radishes, turnips, collards and maybe some clover. Check your local Farm Service business for seed, we get seed for a fraction of the cost compared to the stuff in the stores. I recently bought 100 lbs of winter rye, 100 lbs of triticale, 30 lbs of brassica mix and an extra 5 lbs of turnips for $175. IMG_6458.jpg My buddy has a few nice clover plots which provide food year round but requires a little more maintenance. Oats are another good option, however if you’re in a cold climate they will die out in the winter but they also come back in the spring and provide a food source for turkeys.

I don’t do soil tests, I just apply some pelletized lime and fertilizer every year and seem to have pretty good looking plots year after year.
