Finally found my first gen!

Hi!
Long time forum member… I had an 05’ for 10 years, bought a 2016 trd or 9 years ago ( new) but I have always wanted a first generation Tacoma. Today I finally found one.
Frame has been repaired, box is rough, cab looks great. Drives straight. Shifts smoothly. Can’t wait to start fixing her up!
Here she is!!

 

What is wrong with the bed? It looks like the bed is shoved alway up against the cab and dropped two inches in the front.

 

The bed is rotted and falling apart. Need to find a replacement …

That’s pretty cool! I think I would prefer a full box, but it remains to be seen how hard that will be to find…
I haven’t even looked closely at how many repairs I am looking at with this truck, but there will be many. Going start by cleaning it inside and out,

 

Got her cleaned up a bit today… going to need exhaust and brake work for sure, suspension too probably. Frame is not horrible… she was krowned at some point in the past. The brackets for the box are toast… not sure how hard that will be to fix.

 

I haven’t seen any pictures of the frame but from your description IMO I would be looking for another one. I guess it just depends on how far you want to go with the restoration.

It took me over 3 years to find this one! They are so rare where I live. The seller was getting dozens of replies in the first hour of listing… the only reason he held it for me was because we had a mutual friend on facebook. I know I could sell the truck for triple what I paid with no problem. I am not skilled enough to do a full restoration, but if I can get it solid enough to use for hunting and fishing I will be happy. I will take some pics of the frame tomorrow as I need some opinions on it.

 

That’s a hard color to find and the paint looks pretty good from what I can see.

 

I apologize if I came off negative I agree they are getting harder to find and I’m sure you will have a great gen1 when you get it on the road. I’m sure you will also have fun working on it too!

 

You got a solid truck. Nothing that can't be fixed. I just spent a good chunk of money on my 2001 Tacoma SR5 extended cab. The second frame when getting bad. Mine has 262000 miles on it and still the original clutch in it.
