I've got a 2011 Toyota Tacoma 2.7 l 4 cylinder engine and want to change the oil filter myself. I found the filter but it has a black cover on it with 2 bolts attached. Is this jus20250619_112646.jpg t a cover for this filter? I have looked on the internet and can't find anything similar to this.

The video I saw on a 2.7 filter change did not show a cover over the oil filter. It was high on the block with the alternator nearby as you viewed the filter up from below.

I don't see a "black cover with 2 bolts" in the pic, but my eyes are 62 years old. I see a something silver/gray with 2 bolts, but it looks like the starter. Is that a pic of the driver's/left side of the engine? My 2013 has a 2TR-FE, and the oil filter is on the passenger/right side of the engine.

But now I'm second guessing because I just do it without thinking about what side of the engine it is. Either way, there is no "cover" of any kind on the filter.

if there was a video of 'how-to' when tacoma is on ground level, on stands, and not six feet off ground on lift...

does the passenger wheel need to be removed to access that filter?

also...does front undercover skid need to be removed to access drain plug if on ground level?

    1) Because the video needs to be while on the ground to show the process and placement of things? Only difference is the space between the underside and the ground.

    2) No, the tire does not need to be removed to get to filter, just crawl under the passenger side behind the tire and look up at the engine.

    3) (Why does being on the ground vs. lift matter so much?) Depends on the skid plate, OEM one doesn't need to be removed.

what if you cannot easily crawl and scoot underneath?
there is not that much clearance to fit shoulders...even on stands
without the undercover removed and direct view of pan drain plug aren't you just blindly reaching with the ratchet and socket? it would suck to strip that plug! and potential stuck on there gasket

I have an 09, 2.7...Drive up on jack stands and the filter is easily seen and removed. I don't know if my 09 is similar to the 2011.

do you know if you get a fuller and better drain from the sump pan with the front angled up on ramps?

i have been trying to get at the filter from behind the passenger wheel
frame crossmember is a bit in the way of the shoulder
LCA seems to be in the way trying to get at it from the side from the front end

I'd guess the fuller drain is if level. What are you trying to use to get the filter off if its beyond hand tight?

Go to harbor freight and get a filter wrench that fits on the end of a ratchet wrench extension...I use Toyota filters, so bring one with you to fit fit the oil filter wrench...It's easy...Take your time and don't overthink it.
