This post says your my kind of people.
Best buy dates are suggested. As you know.
Properly stored peanut butter is still tasty years after said date.

I was forced to realize a few years ago I needed to eat to live not live to eat. Sometimes it sucks and I’d live no more than to chow down on a pizza or sub or something but I just can’t handle the carbs.
Welcome to the thread it’s been pretty dead for a little while it’d be nice to open discussions up again

Damn raising your own meat isn’t something we have ventured into. Very admirable to me I hunt to take care of part of our meat supply.
We do raise our own veggies have for years. She either cans, freezes, or dehydrates everything we don’t eat right away.

Following the thread and I appreciate the thoughts expressed. We have gardened for years, presently repurposing some old Powder River cattle troughs as raised beds. We have gardened as much as a quarter acre but now its mostly the three troughs and some pots, and we planted three fruit trees and some berry bushes that seem to be doing well. We have an ancient apple tree that produces well but the apples are only good for pies because they are so soft and they don't keep well fresh. We raise sheep just about every year, as much to keep the grass manageable as for the meat, and this year we thought we'd try raising ducks for both meat and eggs. What a trip they are. Very different from chickens, both good and bad. We've been experimenting with drying food with any overage. I think it lasts long term better than freezing, but you give up something in taste.
One of the things I notice a lot is how our garbage can is practically empty compared to anyone else on the street. I can't believe how much stuff people throw away or consume. We build things that they buy. One of the things we built recently is a camping trailer. It's the third one and we like it better than the previous two. It tows behind the Taco easily and has a REAL queen size bed in it.
When the apocalypse hits we know of a place out in the desert that is fairly close to us, with a spring... but it's remote and not many people go out anywhere close. Sheltering in place may still be a better option, but it's good to have alternatives.

Any chance you can freeze/refrigerate right after picking? Or immediate slicing and drying?

Tbh, I'm all about the bug in unless it's physically unsafe. Can't stand 24/7 watch by yourself, which means you need a crew.

We freeze the pies and dry some apples.

Where I live there is a large religious group that has a spotted history of working well with anyone not part of their faith. I'd have to wonder if their own plan is to prey on the outsiders and get rid of outside ideas at the same time. So yeah, I like bugging in but I feel it might be the more dangerous option.

He may be referring to your red skin. I have been blessed to tan easily, not burn. You must have some Irish in you to sunburn.

Thank you. Did not have much growing up, neither did my wife (tobacco sharecopper family), so we lived off the land.
Frying Spam for breakfast tomorrow, 2 or 3 years past expiration date.
PS y'all stock up pn canned meats and beef. 50% tarriffs on Brazil mean 10-20% higher prices on beef, especially canned, like corn beef. That's where 90% of comes from.

If it's LDS they're generally preppers, it's part of their teachings. Reddit discussion. https://www.reddit.com/r/preppers/comments/1guj90y/whats_with_the_lds_prepping/

As for preying on outsiders.. AFAIK that's not part of the plan. YMMV. Heh our scout troop was formerly one of the mormon ones when they disassociated with the scouting movement in favor of their own.

Best by date is a suggestion. That said, keeping a rotation going in the pantry isn't a bad idea. Plus, rice with fried spam with an egg on top and some kimchee is delicious.

Like I said... spotty history and they definitely promote their own ideas and avoid others.

The linked reddit thread is kinda interesting, and imho if some of the resources mentioned are true, and open to outsiders, might be a good venue to do some networking.
