Aux Transmission Cooler

I could use a little help with available space behind the bumper (plan to mount on the pass side front bumper but don't know the max space). If anyone knows how much space there is (approx) and if I can mount a 12in x 12in (ish) cooler back there I would be grateful for the insight.

Nothing but I've heard they overheat when offroad.

Toyota's "overheating" is 280*F IIRC. That's way too high. 220 is high for me; I prefer 180*F which I doubt I get with the stock "cooler" on a Sunday cruise. Especially when Toyota gives you a "sealed" transmission. This isn't a compromise for me.

 

Im planning on using setrab coolers like in my 2nd gen. never got over 200 towing up steep grades. I wouldent trust a off brand cooler like that. I would be very picky about a filter for flow, all its for is if the trans craps the bed. but with ultrsasonic cleaners you dont have to worry about junking the cooler after that senerio.

my trans got warm tooling around the trails in the mountains this past weekend, in 100+ degree weather in 4wd high. so i can see the need for the upgrade

 

Have you confirmed your current temps when offroading? Personally, I accept slightly higher temps for the reliability of a 100% factory system.

Not sure Id want to trust a cart full of el cheapo Amazon products on something this important

 

No offroading yet; just bought it.

The trans coolant is very low pressure; I've installed trans coolers before; the only "cheapo" part I'm concerned with is the fan.

 

I think you want the aux cooler after the stock cooler.

 

nothing wrong with it, im my experence its the best way besides getting rid of the rad cooler alltogether. but then you want it there to get the trans up to temp quicker in the winter.

If the extrenal cooler is cooling below engine temp the flow through the rad cooler will heat the oil back up. not really what you want.

 

In hotter climates, maybe. I like to keep the stock cooler after the aux for winter so it doesn't overcool and comes up to operating temp quicker.

Since it won't be exposed to the stock cooling fans and mostly rely on the included fan, I could probably get away with both configurations but I feel more comfortable with it in this configuration.

The toyota gauge "red line" is 280*F which is way to high. 180 is the "100k" mile limit typically. As temps go up, milage goes down. 240-260*F is typically the "change immediately" temp.

I don't know what fluids toyota is using but 280*F is generally past the "no go" temp.

 

250 is my limit. But 200-210 is just fine and I wouldn't have an issue with temps in the 220's briefly. As in when I'm nearing the summit of a peak and it only hits 220 for a couple of minutes before starting down and cooling off. If you're getting too hot with the factory cooler, you're in the wrong gear and/or driving too fast.

 

Aux coolers should be on all trucks and off road vehicles imo. I know Toyota claims the fluid can handle it, but guys are getting warning lights.

 

I generally agree but off road you generally never get fast enough for the lock up clutch to engage and you dont have the air flow so you can build heat over time.

My first get would get to 240*F after a long day of trail riding. After the trans cover, 220*F was the highest temps I saw.

 

There are a few threads over ad tacoma4g.com. Complaint is generally related to long uphill climbs in 4Hi.

 

Anyone have a custom PID for Torque or OBD Fusion for the Trans temp?

 

I’m curious where you’re tapping in, and this fitting seems too small in diameter to have adequate flow. The tighter the fit fitting the higher the pressure.
