I’m looking at a few very very clean 2.7 2014/15 extended cab 4x4’s. Owners of the 2.7 do you feel under powered on the expressways driving 70-75? What kind of gas mileage you guys getting?

I have a 2012 Base 2.7 five speed 4x4 Regular cab. I'm running 235-85 R17's on Rancho leveling struts and General Spring HD leafs. I can do 75-80 on the thruway...but the thruway is very flat. Anywhere else and I'm in 4th gear a lot of the time, turning about 3500 rpm. I'm not worried that the rpms are too high, but mileage suffers. At times I think I'm down to 16mph. Then again, these trucks don't get the best mileage to begin with. I do haul firewood and a small trailer with my 4 wheeler occasionally. It has enough power to do what I need it to do. It's no powerhouse, but it's as reliable as gravity.

    Depends on the terrain.

22-23 in those conditions, AC on

18 in town, AC always on.

I have a two wheel drive 2.7. Gets me where I want to go without any issues with enough power...On long highway trips I have been getting 29 mpg. Taco is bone stock.

I have a '15 AC base model 4x4. 2.7/slushbox. To me, it's just *barely* enough power to move the truck around with the bed empty. I've had my 5x10 utility trailer hooked up to it and it just feels like its dragging a ships anchor. After the trailer gets loaded with firewood, the Taco is really out of it's league to try to pull a load like that.

In the summer, I can see 19-20 mpg with mixed driving, maybe 22 on a long highway run. In the winter, it gets down to 16-17 because of the winter fuel. Thankfully the "sport" mode makes the transmission behave like it has a manual valve body so I can chose the gear for the grade instead of the computer lugging the engine in too high of a gear. Maybe things would be slightly better with a manual transmission.

They don’t have much power, but they will run forever and get good gas mileage

Yes, it is fine for that. I've had a 2.7 manual since 2009 and its not fast or powerful but It's always been tolerable in the power department. I've towed small tractors and atv's also. If you plan to tow frequently with it in hilly areas the v6 might be a better choice. \

My truck is a prerunner regular cab so mpg will be a little better than an access cab 4x4 but similar. I get 18-20 in town, and 20 hwy at 70-75. I have seen as high as 28 mpg for a tank of gas, but only when on a long road trip where speeds were 55-60.

Base model 5-lug here, lowered on 20s but stock overall diameter. I average 19.5 mpg all day with mixed city/hwy driving. 4th gear is your friend on most inclines, even more so I suspect if you are running an over stock diameter wheel/tire combo.

You must have a standard? I hope so, because otherwise my mileage is really sucking and I'll have to figure out why.

2013 Base 2.7 automatic. It's so base it has nothing - I had to add intermittent wipers and cruise on my own, and there's no audio control on my steering wheel. I even have to roll the window down at the drive-through, but at least I don't have to worry about the windows if I happen to drive into the lake one day. Stock 5 lug tire size (though not low rolling resistance).

I average just short of 26 mpg during the warmer months and low to mid 24s in the cold. I used to drive standard, but in my old age and sucky knee, I hunted down an auto. It was a little difficult to find a 4cyl 2wd because most in New England are 4wd and 6cyl on top of that. I didn't want 4wd because 355 days out of the year, I don't need it, then on top of that just being a homeowner with no commercial need, I just don't need a 6 for 99.9999% of what I want a truck for. I have never had a problem with a 2wd with snows and a little weight in the bed. I haul a full yard of mulch no problem as well as 1/4 yard of gravel at a time - though I think it could do a little more, that's the max the place will load for me with the truck I have for liability.

It has no problem getting above 85 when I've tried (with nothing in the back), but I usually never go above 75 (mostly 68-70) on the highway, but it's because I'm a tight@ss so in my head, I'm always calculating how much more fuel I'm burning for each mile per hour over 65, plus I drive like an old man because frankly, I AM an old man.

2012 reg cab 5 spd 4x4. I get 15-18 but I’m on 33x12.5r17. It’s not a fast truck, and it loses speed uphill easily. Definitely not going much faster than 90, but it does what I need it to do. Occasionally pull trailers with no problems. You can always drop a gear.

I have a 2015 access cab with a 5 speed manual. With the 5 speed it has had enough power to pull my Tab down the Blue Ridge Parkway, through the Smokies, Nova Scotia twice and over to the highest point in West Virginia many times.
I owned a 98 5 speed before this one. Personally I think they are underrated.

wow. thats pretty impressive. I have a 3rd gen auto and w/ some stuff in the bed, like 3 bicycles and 3 adults in the truck it feels like it struggles to just do much of anything. I really want a small pop up but I've been concerned about getting run over trying to do the speed limit.

2006 4x4 5 speed access cab, stock wheels and tires. I don't really have any issues getting up to speed, but I will say it's one of the slowest vehicles I've ever owned. I do a lot of highway driving, but get 21-23 mpg all of the time with the AC blasting.
If you're going uphill at 60-65 mph you're going to need to drop it into 4th gear, otherwise you aren't going anywhere.

Have hauled quite a bit of weight lifting equipment and whatnot in the bed and you can definitely feel it. With all that being said, I love driving the truck, but a bit more power would be nice.

2014 AC 2.7 5sp 5-lug stock tires & wheels with a 200 lb cap plus that much & more in tools and it’s fine at low altitudes up to 6% highway grades and gets 23-25. More on long trips even going 70-75(I’ve gone up to 450 miles before the light came on and had to add 18 gallons to fill it). This tank was 430 with some town and steep hills in 1st. It has all the power I need but probably wouldn’t do well at altitude. For that I’d get something boosted. It’s a workhorse motor not a racehorse.

My 14 base taco with 2.7 auto makes about average of 25 mpg, but I don't drive hard. When I go to the city, the v6 tacos leave me in the dust, even if I drive the speed limit. Look in my mirror, they are behind me, look forward and they zoom by me and are gone.
