    In the mid 70s, I was living just outside of Lexington, Ky and Linda came to Rupp arena for a concert.

    Back then- they didn’t have “ meet and greet” time and I heard that some celebrities finish a show- go down the back steps and get in a limo and they’re outta there- so I decided to try to meet before the show was started.

    So I just walked backstage- being a band nerd- I had my drumsticks in my back pocket. I didn’t get very far when some big security guard came up to me and said - Hey! Where do you think you’re going? And I pulled out my drumsticks and said -MAN, I’m with the band.

    He looked me over and said - Where’s your backstage pass- and I said No one had given me one yet ( which honestly was kinda the truth). He’s given me the once over when all of a sudden-Russ Kunkle (her drummer at the time ) and Leland Sklar (her bass player) came walking by- and I looked at Russ and said Hey- he said Hey man, what’s up- so I looked at the security guard and shrugged my shoulders and he said - well- if you know Russ, it must be ok, and he let me by.

    So I ran down the hallway and said - hey Russ, I’m a drummer and a big fan, would you mind if I talk to you? so he said- come sit with us in the Green Room! So I sat right across from Russ and Leland for like 15 minutes and I was like- What brand of sticks do you like? What kind of heads do you play on? And he said - who’s sponsoring the show? And with a puzzled look on my face- that’s when he told me about endorsements… So I said- what if you were not on the road and playing in your home studio-what would you use? And he said, but I’m not at home…

    Yeah ok, I get it.. so we are chit chatting for like 15 minutes about whatever when all of a sudden- the door opens and it’s Linda Ronstadt with the same big security guard right behind her.

    She points at her watch and says- guys! What are you doing? We got a show to do- then she points at me and says - who in the hell is that guy? At which point the security guard grabbed me by the collar and escorted me off stage.

    I got to see the show and had a close encounter with the band. Good times. I always heard if you do something sneaky like that- if you play it cool and act like you’re supposed to be there- you can get away with a lot

    and it worked! LOL
