It’s 94$ on Ultragauge . com. Looks like I gotta inform them which vehicles I want it set up for? Will I only be able to use this on Toyota’s or can I also use it on other makes? Not a big deal but would be nice to scan my mom’s subi if I ever need to. Small town way up in the mountains so I do all the maintenance on ours and my mom’s vehicles. All 5 vehicles in my driveway are Toyota’s lol. But my mom has a Subi, Honda, Ford, and Chevy smh lol. I see there’s also mounting options you can add on… did you mount yours?

Technically you "could" move it between vehicles but I don't because its mounted and the wires are routed behind dash stuff and it would mess up my fuel and mileage calibrations. if you're just looking to pull check engine light codes and stuff I just use a cheap $20 scanner from Amazon or a nicer Autel tablet scanner I got from a retiring mechanic for more complex diagnosing. There are also bluetooth OBDII scanners/monitors that you can use with your phone which would be more versatile for what you're looking for, pretty sure theres ones that can see trans temps (very helpful if you tow) I assume theres a thread somewhere on this site.

I have it mounted to the dash on the left in the corner just above the HVAC vent using their adhesive "combo vertical and horizontal surface mount" with a little angled arm that I 3D printed so that it sits nice and level. Similar location to this one just a bit lower and tucked nice and close to the dash (and cheaper lol)

@Peter603Taco that is an awesome setup man! I’m definitely getting one! We have his and hers Taco’s and we also got a Venza, Yaris, and Highlander to use it on if need be. I already got a cheap code reader. I wouldn’t be permanently mounting it so that I can swap between our vehicles and my buddy’s Taco. I’d probably mount it in the wife’s ‘06 since it’s the unscathed gem of the stall and also has potential to have the weaker head gaskets. Thanks for all the info bro! I appreciate ya!

This just happened to me. I ran into the store and let the truck idle with the AC on to keep my wife cool, and when I got back, the Ultra gauge was reading coolant temp at 217*. It was a warm and humid day and it was the first time this ever happened. I'm looking at the fan clutch as the problem. The truck usually runs 180* during the winter and 190* in the summer, it's the first time it shot up to 217*

That’s what I did is starting with the fan clutch’s but I don’t have an ultra gauge yet to check actual temps. I’m gonna try and borrow a scope to check cylinder 6 for the dreaded head gasket weep on my wife’s 2006 TRDOR. I just started it yesterday after it was sitting for a few days and it had rough idle for a minute

That’s a huge sign that there’s a HG leak. Runs rough until the coolant in the cylinder burns off

It has P0304 code pending which is the same code it threw and I cleared right after changing the thermostat. I carefully sprayed the front of the engine off where all the coolant had been leaking out the thermostat housing o-ring and figured I accidentally got a drop of water through the coil to plug seal? Most likely didn’t… Anyways I got somewhere to start. I’m gonna start it up in the morning and when it starts missing I’m gonna check the exhaust for steam. Then I’m gonna pull the cylinder 4 plug and see if it looks steam cleaned. If not, I’m gonna swap cylinder 4 and 2 coils and see if it throws a P0302 code? I’m hoping it’s just the coil. I got a coolant pressure tester w a scope coming day after tomorrow, also got a compression tester to see if my compression is low on 4? Definitely gonna diagnose this thing out and will keep y’all posted. Super thankful I got a buddy that’s ASE tech to let me borrow the tools!

When the Ultra gauge showed 217*, the dash gauge showed the normal temperature. No noticeable change in the needle movement.

Went out and started the truck mid morning. Outside air temp was about 80. Truck was stumbling as usual. I could see faint steam coming out of the tailpipe that cleared up as the exhaust got hot. Waiting on tools to pressurize the coolant system and scope cylinder 4

Just did a compression test on cylinders 2, 4, and 6. #’s were 2@174psi, 4@170, 6@170, so parameters are fine here. Going to compress the cooling system to 15psi and scope cylinder 4 tomorrow evening. Hope for no leaks. Cylinder #4 is misfiring. If I don’t detect a coolant leak in cylinder 4 I’m going to swap #2 and #4 coils and see if the CEL follows it to #2 by throwing a P0302 code instead of the P0304 code I’m getting now with the misfiring? I’m getting ahead of myself lol

It’s the head gasket. Just finished scoping cylinder 4 after pressurizing the coolant system and there was a small puddle of pink stuff next to the piston. I really wish I would have done my homework on these pos 4.0’s made before December 2005. I feel bad for anyone that has an ‘05 or 06 like us that is manufactured before then. There should have been a recall after all that I have read! Wtd now? Replace the engine or the gaskets, timing chains, etc?

I bought an 06 off the dealer lot back in 2016 with only 40k miles on it. Interior looked brand new so I bought it without any research into this model/year and that was my first Tacoma. Loved that truck, I never noticed anything wrong with it at all, but now that you mention that HG issue I'm glad it was rear-ended and totaled in 2019 although at the time I was pissed off because it never gave me a problem. Hoping you get yours all fixed up at a great price.

If you can DIY then replace the parts for sure.
