Good idea. Since I was changing my coolant anyway, I went ahead and changed the thermostat and upper/lower radiator hoses as well. Those parts were not expensive and changing them requires draining the expensive coolant, so why not?

 

Thermostat you run to fail. Senseless to change unless you overheat. Honda has 180k brothers Tacoma has 135k. Thermostats work fine. Trust me you'll know when your thermostat starts to go bad.

Nothing wrong with that. It's like a u joint unless it fails you don't get anymore out of it.

I changed my t-stat at 125K and yes, it looked fine, but it was cheap for an OEM replacement and I was doing the coolant and hoses anyway. Made sense in my mind to just replace it and be done with it for another +125K

 

I just want to drain the reservoir and radiator not concern over the block....do you guys think 2 gallons of the pink should suffice?

 

Lol. 305,000 miles on my 2006 Tacoma on original coolant, tstat, water pump, and hoses. No issues. Still pink. Just noticed my heater does not stay warm at idle anymore, only when driving.

Looks like coolant is a little low so I'll add some.

I'm also on original trans fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid.

Only repair I've done on this truck is 1 coil pack and an alternator.

Everything else is wear items.

 

I'm with several folks here... with coolant and auto trans. I pay the money and get it from the dealer.

 

Why do you even bother changing the engine oil? With your approach, I would have guessed you considered that unnecessary as well. I find it interesting that you believe in the concept of wearable items, but don’t believe that fluid additives wear out. Fyi, just because your coolant is still pink does NOT mean that it is still preventing corrosion. These additives are consumed as they do there job and we replace the fluid to get the fresh additives in the system.

PO for my truck got full coolant flush at 102k from a non-Toyota shop. I'm at 113k now and I do now know that type of coolant they used, but levels are a little low (temps seem fine in hot summer for now). How can I know whether water can be added to this?

 

Just add Toyota SLLC (pink) coolant. It is pre-mixed, and compatible with Toyota LLC (red).

 

Yeah I came across the LLCs in my research so far, but I doubt it was used in the recent flush and I'm especially hesitant to add any different brand of coolant to the existing mix

 

I found Napa has a Toyota coolant in 50/50. Expensive, but trucks are expensive. Just wish I could figure out how to change my brake fluid.
