You obviously had a bad experience, no argument...your mind is made up...not going to change it...that said, anyone else on here I'm going to speak to and I just wanted to say there's a lot of awesome dog's out in the world. Shelter and bred. There's also bad shelter and bred. I wouldn't base an opinion because one guy had one bad(assuming) experience.

Houston TX to Las Vegas NM is a very common non-stop drive for me.

Longest ever for me was from Houston TX to Cedar Falls IO in a day. Just over 1000 miles.

Only stop other than food, gas, or bathroom was in Oklahoma to swap trucks from personal to work.

I did a little over 800 in a single day in my Tacoma when I picked up my new to me Super Pacific canopy camper. It wasn't bad at all. Phoenix to north of San Francisco.

About a decade ago I drove from Phoenix to Seattle all in one shot to surprise a gf. The drive was more fun than that relationship was unfortunately. That was a little over 1400 miles and not in my Tacoma. Thankfully that was in my VW. Much more comfortable and quiet, ha.

"pure breed" = Inbred and genetically defective - in my book. It does not mean 'quality' as someone mentioned previously.
I've had relatives pay through the nose for 'pure bred' horrid animals. A complete rip-off... (of course, they were the ones that could least afford to pay...)
I would not even call those a DOG. - especially the supposed 'purest' ones. What a scam.

I will not comment on the 'breeders'.

I've only had rescue dogs. All GREAT looking mutts. Yes, MUTTS. (plenty of people asked to breed with my mutts - but they were all a no-go at that point!)

I would not pay any $$ beyond a minimal adoption fee for a dog. ANY Dog. Less for a 'pure bred' anything. There are plenty of dogs already. You have a choice do not have to take the first one you meet.

Mutts live longer AND have fewer health issues. Vet bills are a rip off these days. We had a nearby vet in the family, but rarely needed their services...

2094 miles round trip pulling an empty 14 foot trailer one way and loaded with @4000 lbs on the return... 42 hours total, including 4 hours to load and strap the machines I was picking up.

I did stop halfway home for a 50 minute nap.

The whole "rescue dog" thing always cracks me up.
If you adopted an orphan, would you call him or her your "rescue kid?"

When we were kids, we went to the pound and adopted a dog. We didn't get a bumper sticker, and it's wasn't considered a heroic act. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Sigh....
I was going with the lingo here... :notsure:
    - I also cringe at the stickers. Never saw it as more than not feeding the dog sellers...

I always get grief because I tell people that we got our current dog at the 'reject' dog pound. (we saw in his paperwork that he was transferred to the pound where we got him from some other pound).

Kind of a broad statement don't you think? I've had both mutts and "pure breed" dogs, have had good and bad luck with both; mutts don't always live longer, that's a stretch. Agreed on the vet bills! I got lucky to get get in with a local old school vet who is very reasonable.

Use to drive every other month from SoCal to Spokane, about 1,200 miles. Truck did great, but man I don't miss that drive.

I bought my black Lab from an amateur breeder. Litter of 8 and he was the last as the others had been sold. I thought there was something wrong with him because his head was so big. Purebred AKC. Guy sold him for $125. Long story short: 95lbs of absolute joy for 13 years. Excellent field dog and loved everyone esp children. No health issues till advanced age. That’s my experience with purebreds. Oh, he would travel whenever and wherever without complaint. 600 miles NC to OH and back.

When rolling along the 5 hope you stopped at Yak's on the 5 in Dunsmuir, CA for amazing burgers and drinks with the new pup.

For your OP I got a gooldendoodle and drove from Bakersfield back to The Bay in about 4 ish plus hours. Something to keep your eye on is puppies are still developing their inner ear canals and are more prone to motion sickness and tossing their cookies on the drive. Pup will probably be pretty mellow because they're going through a big life change. If you haven't already look into the 3/3/3 rule for new dogs in the house. Good luck with your adventure and new addition.

I drove a total of 3300 miles in my 2001 Tacoma. I had to travel from NWS Earle, New Jersey to Norfolk, Virginia and then off to San Diego, California. All in the name of the navy.

Installed and commissioned the central office switch at Ft Monmouth in the early 80’s and Earle was one of remotes slaving off Monmouth. Little hole in the wall. Never thought I’d hear Earle mentioned here.

That day, no. I snacked on what I had with me. It was very much just driving through the fuel stops.

I've on been on 5 south of Sac once. Nice but hope to never do that again. The traffic / drivers were unfun. 101 or 15, I think, are way better for me.

Crazy place, Dunsmuir. An almost dead town trying hard to gain new life. The food is good there.
