I’m looking to swap to 4.88 gears and tuned. Anyone reputable in the middle Tn area?

Hey my man! I can get you tuned. I’m in middle TN & can get you a few recommendations for shops as well. Check your PM’s.

    Consider going 5.29 gears.

    Yeah.
^This, especially if you have larger than stock tires. I went back and forth on it, ended up doing 5.29s and glad I did (running LT285/75R16 tires).

Yea, I was torn too. I listened to people that know much more than I do and settled on 5.29. :) Very happy with the results on 34s.

4.88s is the place to be unless you’re going bigger than 33”

Weight is also a factor in choosing ratios.

Jason at Sibi Built told me he had 4.88 on his truck and then swapped to 5.29 and only recommends 5.29 now. That's all I needed to hear to make the decision.

The actual RPM difference between the two is fairly minimal.

Yea I’m aware. I have 400+lbs of bullshit bolted on. I formed my own opinion from countless recommendations and hours of research including grimjeeper.com. Tire diameter has a much larger effect on the ratio than weight. 4.88 is a plenty big enough jump if all you want is to be able to stay in 6th and climb in 4.

If you see more highway than trail, there’s no reason to be on 5.29s with <33 imho

529 all day! Don’t waste your time with 488. We had 3 customers do 488 last year and they all regretted it. 250 others got 529 all loved it!

If you have stock size tires it’s fine, we find that anything over that 529 is better overall with no change in mpg. Cheers

Another big factor to consider is elevation you typically drive at. The higher you go, the less power/torque your engine will put out, so you'll want your engine at higher RPM's to put it further up in the powerband.
I live at 5000' and typically only go up from there. So every Toyota I've regeared, I've always gone one more gearing up to make up for that.

I went 4.88 several years ago with 285/75r16 tires. Was great. when I wore those tires out I went to 265/75/16. Lighter weight tires, 1 inch smaller. Even better.

Big Dogs in Clarksville hooked me up, night and day difference with the tune. I'm stoked still almost a year later. No gearing experience to help you with though.

488 o 33s with no regrets. Have a long bed, so not much trail duty. A lot of towing and a lot of high speed driving. Toyo ATIIIs with a top speed of 112. Not saying that they get up to that sp:anonymous:eed
