Yeah. When I bought mine the MTs were few and far between. I live in Washington and bought mine in Tennessee...

Crawl control in these newer trucks is far more than a gimmick. I’ve watched novices walk through things with this system that an old twin stick double locked trigger would have struggled on, especially sand. The new tech works wonders.

You don’t get Crawl Control with a manual. You do get MTS Multi Terrain Select.

Is the TRD worth ten grand more. If I'm getting an SR it's going to be an Xtra cab, if I'm getting a TRD it's going to be a DCLB Off Road in the 50k range. 37k for the Xcab and 48k for the OR.

Delay gratification and check out plus try stuff yourself, but I'll offer this from our very long and extensive pre-sales efforts.

If you are doing property maintenance give some consideration to long and short bed. The 5 ft beds were nearly useless for my having to have a work oriented vehicle. Even if someone tells you that you can put a ladder in sideways or sleep sideways consider how much else can't fit that way.

The electric locker was vital for me but the ABS and traction control in modern 4x4s can help. You need the TRD OR package for that. For limited 4x4 use the locker might not be so important. TRD OR with the locker also has bad road and off road friendly wheel/tire combo. For the latter the OEM Trail Terrain TA tires have proven surprisingly great. They are very civil, good in winter, and also for off road use not too extreme.

My wife did not like the non-TRD or not upgrade or premium package seating. In test rides the entry level seating still seemed a great upgrade over our past generation Toyotas.

We have a manual transmission vehicle but for the 4th gen Tacomas the 8 speed automatic is really good for loads, towing and keeping the engine in the ideal power band. I ended up surprisingly happy with the automatic for someone who's mostly had manual transmissions. This point might not be as important to all use but I really like the narrow gap between 7th and 8th for loads, headwinds and climbs.

As much as I'm super happy with the long bed TRD OR I'm glad it is not our only vehicle. I've had many pickups in my life, about 12 years without, and long ago drove semi. If I only had one vehicle I might want it more compact, civilized and efficient than my wonderful long bed. I mostly got a pickup again for a few years where renting one or trailering would be a bother. That would be another point for my suggesting to try lots of stuff.

That I have long trips mixed with short added to my appreciation of the TRD OR with upgrades in the package and single line items. A tangent from my suggesting you consider bed length is I have a Fas-Top (tonneau & topper all in one). For maintenance work and materials plus tools moving it is super nice to quickly have it all covered or open bed.

If you want to save money but want the latest taco then get the most basic of the base models. Because it’s not worth spending additional money. If you’re going all out and want the best then get that premium package.

The extra options that the trd comes with is worth every penny . Base models well let’s be real …suck … it just leaves you wanting more . Sorry to all sr owners .

Worst feeling is spending large amount of money and not being happy. If you think about it, since most people finance their purchases… few thousands of dollars for a premium package is like $40 to $50 a month for a 5 year loan. If that will break your bank then you have no business buying a new car.

Coming down off a mountain rock garden with DAC spoils you for anything else. And on the 4G it doesn't sound like machine guns going off.

Revisiting this. Why not get a Jeep Gladiator? You want a manual you want to drive on the beach you ride a mountain bike to work and only commute in the winter and do some light towing.

Now I'm wondering how these 4Gs handle beach driving and if they are prone to getting stuck in the sand?

Not everyone finances their vehicles. That’s why I bought an SR5 with upgrade over a TRD.

I’d be willing to bet vast majority of people do finance their vehicle purchases.

I see it as the $40 or $50 a month I don't put into a loan can instead goes into an investment account. Then in 5 years I have a few thousand I wouldn't otherwise have.
... and yes, I know, sadly most people don't think that way and would just piss away the money on something else.
    :spending:

Agreed - and certainly a lot of them focus on monthly payment rather than total cost of financing. Years ago I was buying a two year old CPO 4runner - the dealer finance guy offered to "save me money" vs my credit union financing. With a seven year loan. On a two year old vehicle.

Also note that financing with a promo rate like the current 2.99% offer can make sense compared to liquidating higher-yielding investments to pay cash.

I have many $$$ going into my investments per month. Everyone’s financials are different so I understand. For me I have enough disposable income to play with. People that can’t afford to pay the additional $50 a month into a loan shouldn’t be purchasing the vehicle in the first place ( my opinion of course ).

Everyone has their own opinion and wants. When Toyota eventually (hopefully) offers the hybrid powertrain on a long bed model aside from the Trail Hunter, I will likely upgrade and it will be an OR with power seats, and locker.
When I was test driving trucks, I thought the OR suspension is actually a bit more 'plush' than the SR5, and as I have a bad lower back, that can make driving it more enjoyable as well, especially on crap roads.

Manual transmission Tacomas are harder to find. If that is your #1 Must Have, I think when searching for a manual transmission Tacoma you might have to be more flexible on the trim.

I'd just put that $40 or $50 in the tank so I can burn the tires up that much faster and buy another set sooner.
