This always puzzles me. I remember the vast expanses of useless plastic on my 2018. The ones that scratch just looking at it crosswise. The 4G at least tries to make that plastic useful. I think they miss those shiny chrome pieces. The ones around vents and things. Somehow in some lizard brains that is less plasticky.

OP, you forgot to mention the reduced fuel tank capacity. The poor turning radius, reduced range, and absence of a LB hybrid are the three big negatives for me. Most everything else (sans the too small and too big infotainment screen options and stupid removable speaker) checks out well.

#1 complaint was something you can easily turn off, followed by the truck hassles you when you’re driving backwards with the door open. This list leaves me with two takeaways:

1.) Gen4 is apparently so well done that people now have to dig really, really deep to complain.

2.) Any day can be a Friday.

    Welcome.

Something about the 4Runner looks off to me, I might have to get used to it. The wheel arches make it look like it has a really short wheel base. I definitely don't like the rear bumper design with that Tacoma bedside angel and the horizontal portion below the gate looks too much like the Tundra rear bumper. I don't think I like that throw back rear side glass design either it gives a disproportionate look to the side profile. The LC 250 looks way better to me than the 4Runner.

    My useless .02:

On the configurator, I thought the new T4R looked just... off. Made it seem like it had spare tires all around. At the dealer the other day getting oil and filters, I walked by what I can only assume was an employee's vehicle which was a T4R Off Road in Underground, with wheels slightly pushed out just to the wheel arches and some more aggressive A/T tires. Had a rack and a bunch of other stuff, but it definitely felt like in person it was WAY more appealing than online.

That's all I have to add

Yeah I agree. I’m still trying to decide if I like it or not. We’re shopping the T4R,
the new LC and a lightly used GX 460.

Did you test drive the truck or buy its sight unseen. Most of the stuff on your list would have been noticeable sitting in it & driving it.

I get way better mileage in this one than my 2022 or 2019. Keep your foot out of the boost and it will get better. Also, mud flaps were not standard in the last gen. Neither of my TRD ORs had them.

Did you test drive your truck before you bought it? That list isn't a problem for me and my 2025 TRD Sport. The only gripe I can agree with is not being able to reverse with the driver's door open. IT is kind of annoying to have to shut the door when I'm only backing up a few feet to get to my kayak trailer.

Who did these people complain to before the interwebs existed !?

Maybe you should have done some research and a test drive before purchase.

Why can't one back up with the door ajar? Cameras make it stupid easy to back up to a trailer, but I get needing a small adjustment, etc... More nanny stuff?

Last I checked you could remove the doors from a Wrangler or Bronco. You can probably turn that off on the Tacoma. I know I can't see the line with out adjusting the mirror on my 2G because the OEM mirrors are crap, I need to open the door to see the line to know if I'm the spot straight. When will Toyota make improvements to the mirrors on their midsize truck? Don't want or need a power tailgate or the brakes applied when the truck sense the door latch opening. Convex mirrors would be a safety improvement.

I agree with the OP on some of his feedback. I guess I don't see it as a troll post, but as someone who has a little buyers remorse. For the comments about finding all those items during a test drive - I don't know... Unless a person can arrange a 2 day test drive where you get to take the truck home and live with it for a couple of days. Some stuff took a couple of months to find, like not being able to move the truck at all with the drivers door open. That popped up when I was hooking up a trailer.
I agree with the lane assist comment - my first commute to work I normally have an exit that backs up so you have to use part of the shoulder. The truck didn't like that and did try to correct back into the traffic lane repeatedly, but that actually put it at risk of getting sideswiped by the cars ripping by at freeway speeds. As soon as I got to work, I dug through the manual and turned that off. Maybe because I've never had a car/truck before with that feature, I didn't realize how aggressive it could be. My wife's new '26 Passport has a haptic feedback through the steering wheel, but doesn't try to steer the car back into the lane. That is more of my preference if we had a choice.
I also find the cabin more open and airy in my '22 vs my '24, but I don't see it as more/less plastic. Just the center console design and lighter colors make a difference.
I still hope that they offer a DCLB hybrid in a non-TrailHunter trim level soon, as I'd likely jump back to a 4G when that happens.

Ok I'll bite on the specifics, call me gullible.

    1. Lane assist
You already fixed it and it won't come back if you don't turn it back on

    2. When I back up...sometimes, I leave the drivers door open....not any more...the truck wont even more. Anyone know how to turn that feature off?
Found this, of all places, on tacomaworld.com
    1 Put in park
    2 Open door
    3 Put in reverse
4 Start moving backward...beeps, chimes and then brake will be applied and you stop
5 Press down on brake pedal with foot and then disable parking break (push down on the parking brake button* just to the left of the shifter)
6 Take foot off of break and start moving backward again.

    3. Fuel economy is bad...I was getting 21 mpg, not great I know, but it's a truck...now I am down to 18.3...for a four cylinder? Torque is great...but fuel economy sucks.
    Yup truck with torque

    4. I bought the TRD off road ....no mud flaps....and no plug ins in the tailgate which were standard on the last model.
It was like this when you looked at it before purchase. and you bought it

    5. Worst of all, the seat configuration in the rear switched from 40:60 TO 60:40....sounds petty, but I bought neoprene seat covers...that I have since had to retrofit...but changes like this piss me off. The covers were nearly $500....and I had to cut and make it work.
    You paid too much. EKR.

    6. The electronics suck...sometimes it connects....sometimes it doesn't.
    Reset all and retry

    7. Washing the car is a joke...all I can say is leave the keys inside...it will continue to lock and unlock.
    change this in settings

    8. My last major beef is the turning radius....it is far too wide. I used to be able to trailer with no troubles...back up and turn on a dime...now it's more like a 50 cent piece.
It was like this when you looked at it before purchase. and you bought it

    9. My final peeve...too much plastic....if you put anything in a tray or cubby...it rattles which drives me nuts.
    Haven't noticed this but ok

    10. It is super noisy...the motor is loud. I know its a turbo, but come on.
Carista turn off fake engine noise

    11. The turn signals are super quiet....my hearing is good...but I cant hear these at all.
    Carista change blinker volume

    12. Why is the volume switch for the radio on the left side of the wheel and channel changer on the right? What was wrong with the way it was? Ughhh....
Wow really? That's an actual complaint?

    13. I think I lost a few inches in the back seat area...seem more cramped that earlier models.
It was like this when you looked at it before purchase. and you bought it

    I should have bought a 2023...my loss.
There's still time. Plenty of people selling 3rd gens to upgrade to 4th.
