Question - Wheel Upgrade With Bigger Tires

Apparently you can upgrade the tire size to that of an off-road on a “stock” setup? Does stock include stock wheel? Or will one also have to get larger wheels to fit the bigger tires? I’m assuming yes but wanted to confirm incase I’m missing something.

 

Your 16" rims can fit the 265/70R16 offroad size yes. They are the same diameter as your SR5 but slightly wider.

Most go to 265/75R16 for a small size upgrade and no rubbing on any model. They will work with your SR5 rims no issue.

 

Or you can go "skinny" with 255/85R16 (33" tires) with a good alignment to move the tires forward in the wheel well. That is a sizable increase in size and will fill your wheel well completely. See the 255/85R16 threads for more info on that. Do note the alignment will have to be done at an experienced shop with 4x4 expertise. On mine I didn't even have to remove the mud flaps.

 

Tire options are incredibly limited in the 16" compared to the 17 and your limited to E load only in a 255

I think we, or perhaps I'm confusing you with others, have been over this before. The OP is budget minded, hence his wishing to reuse the 16" rims, he has purchased a seven-year-old SR5 after all - not the top of the line. Take no offence OP. Yes, it would be best for him as far as tire choices to go to a 17" rim, but he needn't make that decision today. He will be putting on many different tire sets over the years, after all he did buy an SR5. I suspect this man is prudent and value minded. I never try to get people to spend money they don't have or don't wish to spend. He has narrow tires on his SR5 already, he may like to continue that look. But, then again, his inquiry concerns a tire that is the same diameter as what he currently has, only wider.

I'd like to add to the 255/85R16 limitations, they are not just E Rated, but only available in MT according to my knowledge/research. Very little selection, but he should know of the possibilities.

 

I've been running 255/85/16 for a few years, and before I had my lift. I wanted more ground clearance on my 17' trd offroad and yes the E rated is a heavier tire and you notice the change (weight & stiffer sidewalls) but it works for me.

If I could I'd rather have a 15" tire than 17"...I'll probably end up going 17" when I change the oem rims.

Not sure on the fitment on an SR5, and what's bigger to you.....wider or taller?

 

Noting the budget minded approach i would stick with the 265 for all the options for brands load ratings etc... it will be the largest easiest and most available option.

 

If you keep your oem rims, you will have "much" less chance of rubbing with bigger tires, until you go with 285s or wider.

32" 265/75/16 will not be an issue, nor "should" a 33" 255/85/16 pizza cutter tire, rub either.

Once you go aftermarket rims with a different offset, then you can definitely run into rubbing issues, regardless off getting a small lift or not.

 

I am running 285/75R16 on stock 16x7.5 rims on a 2020 SR. I had to trim a very small amount of plastic on the lower rear portion of the front fender, but other than that, no rubbing. Been using them for several years with no problem. Yeah, I know the recommended rim size is 16x8, but the 16x7.5 work just fine.

 

Falken and Cooper offer all-terrain 255/85r16 tires. They fit on stock wheels 16 x 7 or 7.5.
I have one on a stock wheel as my spare, and I carry 6 stock lug nuts for it.

 

Thanks for the input all. So I bought this truck with new Falken Wildpeak AT3 tires. Again they are the stock size (little narrow). Do you all think it would be worth it to upgrade other than aesthetics? They're baller tires just not sure if I'm missing anything with the extra width.

 

Eye of the beholder. I have watched multiple studies that show thinner is better in most situations but I myself wanted fat tires.

 

Incorrect. Wildpeak AT4w is a C load rating in 255/85/16. Otherwise, yes the options are more limited. That size may cause some rubbing, though...may. I would say that if the OP doesn't really need the slight lift you get from the 33s, the 265/75/16 is a good size.

edit: My previous tires were 265/75/16 General Grabber ATx. They were lighter than the Wildpeaks but 10 ply. For 10 ply, they weren't terribly stiff.

 

what size lift or level do you have? I’m about to do a 2” level and been trying to find some info on what will fit without rubbing upper control arm and with no cutting. I’ve gotten a different answer from everybody I’ve talked to but from what your experience would I be ok doing a 285/75R16 Nitto Ridge grappler with 2” level in the front nothing to back? Have the same rims you have?

 

If you go off-road, tire diameter counts more than width, which means sell your tires and get 255/85-16 (33").

 

Looks like Ironman foam cell pro kit. 2" - 3" lift.
