Ok Ok I get it. I jump in and destroy the cool vibe. Fair point.

Just to prove I'm not totally full of crap (in this particular case only...), below is the cut and paste from the 2008 owner's manual. Note the last two bullets. Basically they can do anything with your data...and yes, they use carrier pigeons, or anytime your vehicle is attached to a diagnostic machine which they all have two way data transfers (here is this specific vehicle, use the past history to help my fix it now). Nerds rule!

    5-1. Essential information

    Event data recorder

Your vehicle has computers that monitor and control certain aspects

of your vehicle. These computers assist in driving and maintaining

    optimal vehicle performance.

Besides storing data useful for troubleshooting, there is a system to

record data in a crash or a near car crash event. This is called an

    Event Data Recorder (EDR).

In a crash or a near car crash event

The SRS airbag sensor assembly contains the EDR. In a crash or a

near car crash event, this device may record some or all of the following

    information:

    ● Gasoline engine speed

    ● Whether the brake pedal was applied or not

    ● Vehicle speed

    ● To what extent the accelerator pedal was depressed

    ● Position of the transmission shift lever

    ● Whether the driver and front passenger wore seat belts or not

    ● Driver’s seat position

    ● SRS airbag deployment data

    ● SRS airbag system diagnostic data

    ● Front passenger’s occupant classification

The information above is intended to be used for the purpose of

improving vehicle safety performance. Unlike general data recorders,

the EDR does not record sound data such as conversation between

    passengers.

    Disclosure of the data

Toyota will not disclose the data recorded in an EDR to a third party

    except when:

    ● An agreement from the vehicle’s owner (or the leasing company for

    a leased vehicle) is obtained

    ● Officially requested by the police or other authorities

    ● Used as a defense for Toyota in a law suit

    ● Ordered by a court

    However, if necessary Toyota will:

    ● Use the data for research on Toyota vehicle safety performance

    ● Disclose the data to a third party for research purposes without disclosing

details of the vehicle owner, and only when it is deemed

    necessary

    ● Disclose summarized data cleared of vehicle identification information

to a non-Toyota organization for research purposes

EDR has been around basically as long as OBD-II. This is not a "connected" function over cell towers etc (Also as @3JOH22A mentioned, even if it was the networks they potentially could have run on are far defunct now). Can it be queried when at a dealership, sure, i dont think they have much interest though (there may be specific mandated conditions that allow manufacturers to querey this data tpp) as its intended purpose was mandates for liability, safety investigation, and consumer safety (NHSTA, etc..). This is a mandated function for all cars and is used by insurance companies, leo, etc.. post accident investigation. I'm sure the aforementioned institutions also claim free reign on this data as they get it.

TLDR: basically a black box that keeps people honest when setting collision liability. ie. Driver: "I was on the brakes going the speed limit", Ins: "No you weren't, you were full throttle at 2x the speed limit with severe steering angle inputs."

Agreed. My point wasn't in how it was transmitted, but that the driver doesn't have control. Now, with the anti-theft and other insurance big bro approaches, not only is their a loss of control, but it happens via modern transmission protocols. Bastards

I 100% am on the side of being against any vehicle that can have a connection to the mothership, and will hopefully never have to own one! If you really want to start needing to shop at Costco for tin foil, look into V2X which is basically getting mandated by the EU currently and homologated into all the global cars already.

Yes me too. I might have to sell this project after I test it out. It's turned into a worst wheeler than when it had the ifs. But oh well... Such is life.
