Speaker Break-In

So I did a search but wasn't as thorough as I probably could have been, so sorry if this is a repost. I have done several car audio systems and I have helped with a good number of car audio systems as well. Here is the thing, anytime somebody replaces their speakers I always get asked the same question... How do you recommend I break in my speakers. I know just like everything else there are thousands of possibilities so I figured I would get everyone on here to throw up their method for breaking in speakers.

I usually start out at about 1/8 of the max volume (depending on the radio) and I will stick with that for about a week, and then every week after that I will add 1/8 of the volume max until I get to the highest volume I can comfortable listen to.

What does everybody else use as their method?

 

I turn my shit up full blast right out of the gate. My system still pumps like Arnold.

 

WTF? Theres a "breakin period" for speakers?
I Have never heard of such a thing.............Not being a smartass here but are you for real? I crank my shit up right out of the box like the guy above and have never had any problem at all. Id like to see some supporting data on this.

 

Never have I ever heard of a speaker break-in. If you've got it, pound it!

 

well i just skimmed the shit out of Google on this subject.....seems there might be maybe some stock in what he is saying. One thing I read that kinda caught my ear and made a lot of sense was "speakers loosen up over time and require less power to drive them" I can understand that for sure, but for the human ear to be able to tell the difference in a new speaker or one that is a year old.......nahhhhh I call BS on that! But Im not an Audio expert or the hearing test lady so ill shut up now.

I purchase my speakers and the black tie protection from best buy. The protection covers damaged and blown speakers for 2-4yrs. However its smart to listen to new speakers at low volumes to break em in.

Break in speakers...... really......

Before I started doing my own installs, I bought a couple of system upgrades thru my local stereo shop. They never said anything about a break in period for the speakers. If the guys that do this work every day don't talk about it, I say BS and crank it up.

 

I have always looked at speakers like this, the more you use them the more they wear out, but the harder you use them the faster they wear out. To me breaking them in is only prolonging the life of them. On the other hand some people believe that you should break an engine in by driving it hard and at different speeds, maybe the same could apply here?

 

I've only heard about break in periods on upper end, larger subwoofers, but not on just regular speakers. Needless to say, I still crank that shit up.

 

I have had some kicker subs in the past and the manual says not to blast them for 2 weeks. I don't remember specifics but when you play them there is a glue/sealant that settles over the first two weeks...

On mythbusters they used the MTX demo truck for some super bass myth. One sub caught on fire because it was relatively new and the glue never settled.

These are extreme situations. Personally I take it easy on new subs for a week or two just to be safe. Other speakers are fare game.

 

Yeah that is true on the subwoofers in the higher end but even. Still they have notes on them that say something like needs to be played aggressively and will get louder as played
