Best place to buy replacement steering rack

As the title states, where is the best place to get a replacement steering rack for my 00 tacoma.

What's going on with your rack? Leaking,worn out?

 

Thought it was my power steering pump but its the seals leaking on the rack. Need to be replaced. Mechanic quoted me 1200 bucks and i said screw that ill do it myself.

How bout for 2nd gens? Cuz alignment shop said i needed new inner tie rods :/

 

No, I just got play in it and when its aligned in specs, the wheel is still to one side and truck pulls the second I let go. Gonna replace rack,bushing, and now probably tac weld steering shaft. Better fix this sh*ty steering.

 

I work at Carquest and priced one today for 280

 

Is that for the whole rack? And I am assuming its rebuilt? Is there a warranty?

 

I have a first gen and when i went in for an oil change (Bud built skid for $24 its worth them dealing with it) He told me that both my inner TRE needed to be replaced. After about 30 seconds in the driveway i determined it was my rack bushings not the TRE's.And these people want my bussiness

 

Dude, TRE's are a breeze to replace...you don't need to be finding prices on a new steering rack. Pop the ball joints where they connect with the steering knuckle and unscrew the TRE's from the shaft...20 minute job per side. Then replace.

OP....I replaced my rack with a reman'd one from NAPA for $230. Works well with 30k and counting. Not hard to replace either. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

 

Do you think its worth going with toyota OEM?

 

The guys who did my alignment said my steering rack that needed to be replaced and wanted like 800 bucks!! and all it needed was new bushings and installed them myself.
but mine was not leaking just let the tires shake back and forth.. but now its fixed!

 

Its prolly easier on a first gen, cuz i've already replaced my rack & pinion andit took me like 2 days to do it. Its so freaking hard to manuver in there, you have to take off both wheels, sway bar, disconnect everything, lower shock stud, then you have to push the rack in all the way to one side and bring it back to the other while twisting. Fak! Im, sure I need Inner tie rods, (outers are easy to replace) but I just don't wanna go through that hassle again, its such a pain.

 

Some would say yes, I say no. Somethings are worth sticking to OEM, but since my OEM rack only lasted 53k, I was willing to try a cheaper alternative. I generally trust NAPA parts.

I ordered a rack from autozone, cuz I work there and it turned out to be different. I think 2wd is different from 4wd, but they still sent the wrong one. O'Reallys have the same part number, i'm pretty sure it wouldn't work. The fitting was reverse and different than my oem rack.

 

2wd and 4wd use the same rack. mine was 2wd when i bought it and has since been convert too 4x4. 96-03 have the same suspension set-up, brakes, etc...
