    :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Seriously though, it's a defining period in our history.
I'd be tempted to call it our national epic, our Iliad...
... if not for the Revolution, the World Wars, and victory in the long twilight struggle of the Cold War.
    It's a proud history.

Have any of you read the Memoirs of General Ulysses S. Grant?
It might be the best written, most honest of all military memoirs.

Grant was unfairly labeled a butcher.
By rights, his strategy for 1864 should have ended the war that year.
His subordinates failed him at every turn, despite having largely superior forces.
General Sigel's Valley campaign failed, the attack up the James River failed.
Grant himself said that General Butler on the James:
... "allowed himself to be penned in the Bermuda Hundred Peninsula as in a bottle strongly corked".

Grant with the Army of the Potomac repeatedly tried to out maneuver Lee with his Army of Northern Virginia.
Attrition was not his strategy, but was imposed on him by Lee.
Every movement he made was met by Confederates in rapidly dug field entrenchments.
Thereby Lee, on the tactical defensive, could inflict hugely disproportionate casualties.
This was the one real option open to Lee... hope that the North would grow discouraged by the bloodletting.

The wonder is that the North fought it through.
Grant rightly points out that the North fought for the Union.
Hard for some to understand these days perhaps, but it meant everything to those men.
A divided country would simply lead to more war at a future time.
The territory is by nature one economic unit.
A united country, on the other hand, would bestride the world as a colossus.

Grant paid tribute to the South, saying they fought with unexampled courage, honor and determination.
The South fought to the very end.
Southerners thought they could never be conquered, and that would have been true if their opponents had not been fellow Americans.
    Conquered they were, and occupied.
    There was no other way.

    TL : DR

I grew up with constant speeches about the War of Northern Aggression so I 100% check out as soon as I hear anything about it these days
My eyes glaze over and my brain just shuts off

The South was never conquered [ask any Southerner] - tho the influx of fucking yankees these days might have me thinkin' different

I quit all SM like 5+ years ago
I had a neighbor who wanted to argue on Fbook - told her to say it to my face and then I quit everything

It is a waste of time/energy to argue with internet weirdos
IRL relationships are far more valuable

    Are we though?
I feel like every generation says this when they get to be our age cause shit ain't the same as it used to be

I spent some time substitute teaching [may go back to it] - oddly enough that gave me more hope and I went into it expecting to be disappointed; the kids were actually pretty good and not as stupid as I assumed. It seemed no worse than when I was in school and maybe a little better. Of course comparing anything to Tampa's mega prisons for children isn't really a high bar but still.

Control of the economy has always been held by a few folks/families

It has also enabled free speech in many ways, for better and worse

The 3D printing of firearms is a huge step forward - the code that enabled this is speech (and thus the government cannot censor it) that fact is extremely powerful
