yes vague, and that's the end of my saga with Bob's Watches. I hope it's a one off too. Speaking of being tanks, it just now occurred to me what I put it through being that close to the drag cars. The high pressures hitting your chest and pushing all the air out of our lungs. I hope watches can put up with that. My first time at an event like that. I knew it would be loud, didn't know it was like being right next to a huge bomb explosion.

it is my favorite chrono now!

oh, out of the vids I took, I did get the Top Fuel final run:

It will be fine. Part of Omegas certification is the ability to withstand shocks of around 6000g. I've fired a .50 BMG while wearing my Omega many times without issues. They certainly aren't fragile watches by any means! Wear it and enjoy!!

(I also don't think @JDAM damaged his watch being close to drag cars but) what does being able to withstand 6000g have to do with withstanding excessive pressures?

If the watch is on my wrist, and it experiences even 100g, I've got bigger problems than weather my watch is still working.

Sound energy can induce vibrations to a mechanical movement, much like shock waves. While watches are not measured for sound pressure influence, they ARE measured for shock (also vibrations). A watch that can handle more shock force will generally be more resistant to sound pressures.

    Informationally;
"NASA subjected watches to a series of rigorous tests to ensure their reliability in the harsh environment of space. These tests included high and low temperatures, vacuum, humidity, corrosion, shock resistance, acceleration, low pressure, high pressure, vibration, and sound. Only the Omega Speedmaster passed all of NASA's tests and was officially certified for manned space missions, earning it the nickname "Moonwatch".

Tudor Pelagos something or other (in Cubbie Blue as far as I'm concerned). I've had a Speedmaster, Aquaracer and another Tudor. I've had this 4 years - will keep it 40.

Bingo. Know a few guys wearing seamasters in very...kinetic...career fields that expose their watches to sim round impacts, breaching charges, goose guns, etc that put serious wear and tear on them, and they still keep ticking without issue.

The only thing I keep my watches away from is the sizeable electromagnet we have at work, cuz that will absolutely make things go weird quickly.

If you knock you wrist on a doorframe, etc and the watch is the impact point, it can def impart strong G-forces locally to the watch for brief periods of time. Not saying its 100Gs, but strong events can happen locally at scales pretty high relative to the rest of your body, etc.

Right. I understand how pressure works. If you had said “Bannerman, your Sea Dweller was tested to withstand a pressure of 5000’ of water column, loud engine noise won’t affect it” that would have made sense. I didn’t follow equating G resistance to sound pressure levels.

Pressure waves are an external force acting on a body (watch). Force imparts acceleration, acceleration measured in Gs.

“LONGINES, ROLEX and OMEGA, underwent 11 types of test. Detailed assessments were made during and after each test. The physical integrity of the different components of the watch as well as its functions and rate were checked and noted.

The two other brands failed the high-temperature tests; one of the watches lost its glass, warped by the heat. The decompression test also deformed the glass. Finally the humidity test stopped one of the watches.

The OMEGA Speedmaster also did not come out unscathed: the luminous material on the hour markers of the dial deteriorated and the rate was affected by the decompression and acceleration tests. It nevertheless passed the tests”

I guess they still used acrylic in the early ‘60s. Wonder how our modern watches would fare. I expect most would pass.

Water pressure and sound energy are two different things, so by me saying that, it would not be true. Water pressure is more of a constant force whereas sound energy is a form of mechanical energy transmitted through a medium. A watch may be tested to 5000 feet of water depth, but succumb to shocks from, for example, shooting a medium caliber rifle. Sound pressure can impart a vibration into the watch's movement causing damage, regardless of water pressure rating of the watch. The water pressure rating only describes how well sealed the case is, not the durability of the movement.

My cheap automatic handles shocks pretty well the past 6 years. Lots of heavy chop on the waterways, nailing it into walls/doors when I was on subs, chopping wood, impact drivers, chainsaws/lawn equipment you name it. It still keeps time just as well as when I bought it. Don’t know what it’s rated for but it handles it fine. Plenty of chips in the glass and scratches. Anyone ever actually damaged their movements without totally destroying the case and crystal?

Acrylic is still used on manned flights, as it won't shatter. In the case of the Omega Speedmaster, you can get an Acrylic or Saphire version. Acrylic is more for the "purists" of the heritage me thinks. As for modern watches, Im not sure. Not many have as robust of a movement as the Omega Co-axial..........Although I think the Casio F-91 would probably beat all of them.
