    So I've been getting that locker bug again (for my pussy 5 lug yes) and I need your help. I have access to a factory e-locker fully assembled 3rd member from my shop teacher at school. He bought it for his 4 runner and then sold the car before putting it in. We can easily handle the fabrication if it will fit. That's where you come in. I need to know the specs of the TRD rear axle... here's a table to help

    THIS CHART IS FOR '95.5-04 MODELS ONLY!

    The axle code for your rig can be found on the manufacture's sticker located on the driver's side door jamb as follows:
    First digit:
    A = 7.5" ring gear
    B = 8" ring gear
    Next two digits:
    01 = 3:42
    02 = 3:58
    03 = 4:10
    04 = 4:56
    05 = 3:15
    06 = 3:91
    07 = 4.30
    Last digit:
    A = 2 Pinion, Open
    B = 4 Pinion, Open
    C = 2 Pinion OEM Limited Slip
    some '98-00 models have shown a BO code of "???" on the door plate; so far this turns out to be a 3.91 gear ratio, at least for the 5sp. RZN171L-CRPDKAB with factory 31s/265s should be 4.56 with the AT.
    Edit by Ed Quinones on 10-7-05: I used to own a 99 Prerunner ext cab 2.7L with auto tranny and gear code of B07A. It came from the factory with a 4.56 gear ratio.

    Mine is A02A, which is a 7.5" ring gear. I believe the TRD have the 8" ring gear so I may be SOL. Would the 8" ring gear fit in my 7.5" housing? I really hope so because I think I'll get a pretty good deal on it and I'd get 4.10 gears out of the deal too. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help!

    I think that the only way to get the 3rd member under your truck is to have the whole rear differential and housing from a trd truck. . . then you're stuck with 6 lug in the back and 5 lug in the front . . My advice is get a mechanical locker, that's what i plan on doing. Probably a powertrax or something like that.

    None of your options are cheap.

    You can get an Limited Slip, I pretty sure you can look at 7.5" LSD's for Supra's etc.

    or

    You can get an ARB. The same part number that fits the front IFS will work for the rear 7.5

    Another possibility. Run a TRD rear with either 1) custom 5 lug axles, or 2) Re-drill the 6 lug axles for 5 lugs. I once got a set of axles redrilled for a hot rod to change bolt patterns.

    Richmond Gears makes a couple nice options. Lockright or a no-slip. I have a No-slip in mine and i dont have any complaints so far.

    I wouldnt recommend Lockright for a daily driver either, but the road manners of the No-slip are alot better.

    I dont necessarily think it would cause any problems for a daily driver, i just think for IIRC $100 more you can get the no-slip. From what i have heard (ive never ran a lockright) it has better street manners. Does your lockright chirp the back tires when you make a tight turn?

    Hmm they sounds pretty similar then if you ask me. This is what i found that differs between the two.
    Edit: I didnt truly know the difference sorry.

    No-slip

    These Powertrax no-slip traction systems are the latest design in traction-adding differential technology. They combine the smooth operation of a limited-slip differential with the traction performance of a locking differential. A precise synchronization mechanism eliminates the ratcheting sounds typical of other locking differentials. Special gear and spring designs reduce the backlash and, therefore, the driveline windup. Only ultra-strength material that is 67 percent stronger than titanium is used. Installation is simple because no ring and pinion setup is required. In addition, no special tools or oils are needed. Step-by-step, model-specific instructions are provided with every kit.

    Lock-right

    The Powertrax Lock-Right and Performance Lockers' straight-line performance is equal to a solid spool axle, yet automatically unlocks to allow full differentiation in turns. The lockers also reduce the excessive noise, tire wear, and drivetrain damage associated with other lockers. Made in the U.S.A., Powertrax lockers replace the spider gears in your differential carrier without affecting your ring and pinion settings. The whole job can be done in your driveway with common hand tools in a couple of hours. A carrier is not included.

    Did any other vehicle come with an E-locker on a 7.5" ring gear? Like maybe a 4 runner? I don't know what it came out of for sure.

    What about directly swapping the rear axle from a Ranger? (it would be treason, i know.) I'm not sure about how well it would fit etc etc but at least you could use the wheels you already have?

    The Ranger GTs that were made around 1986 had a "Traction-Lok" limited-slip differential with 3.73 gears.

    And the newer FX4 level II has a 31-spline 8.8-inch rear axle with a Zexel-Torsen limited-slip differential. They started that package around 2009.

    Well I guess I'll stick with the lunchbox locker then if I want to lock it up. The 3rd is for sale now... if anyone's interested I can ask the owner for you.

    Are you looking for an air-locker/e-locker of do you want a mechanical limited slip diff?

    Well I was going to do the e-locker if it fit but now I'll just do an automatic locker.

    Yea, okay. So now you're looking for an actual mechanical limited slip, not a locker.
    I'm thinking of trying to swap an 8.8" axle from a Mustang GT. A lot of guys on customtacos.com have done that.

    Instead of a Mustang look for an older leaf sprung Explorer. They had the 8.8 and some came with a LSD. That will also have better gear ratios for a truck than a stang. That's a popular swap for Rangers.

    Only reason, other than getting a LSD or replacing a 7.5 of course.

More mods to come, thinking a 6 inch lift and arb bumper etc etc.
    Alright im new to lockers and i want to know a couple things im thinking about putting a lunchbox locker probably a power trax lockright from richmondgear.com or somthing of the sort... seems to be the easiest way and friendly instal as i can see.... however i already have the electric rear locker on my 2009 toyota tacoma access cab v-6 4L and even though the locker works fine theres two reasons why i would rather have the lunchbox locker... because it would be nicer to have a locked axle untill i turn... and two i can only lock the rear diffrential with the truck in 4low.... now i have thought about isolating the electric locker so i could run it whenever i would like but... that rasies even more questions about how strong that electric locker is??? and probably not a wise idea to have a locked rear end and drive around turning in a parking lot etc... this is why im thinking that he lunchbox locker would be a better viable option... because its locked when i want it to be and open when i want it to be .... however im wondering if this would be a PITA to take out the electric locker and put the lunchbox in ... has anyone done this in a 2nd gen tacoma ? and how did it go....

    any help on this would be greatly appreciated im going to do as much reasearch on this but i will be the first to say a 1 tire fire sucks ( 1 tire burnout ) i thought about a posi... but to much to deal with stupid special lubricants and clutches .. nah id rather lock it....

    and if this was just a strictly off road bogger like my 86 i would have just broke out the welder and made sure it was locked hahaha ....anywasy shes a daily driver whose driver likes the pedal and wants both tires having traction not just one side :(
