Sometimes small incidents lead to vast consequences.

In 1608, the French explorer Samuel de Champlain accompanied a Huron war party that ran into some Iroquois.
Champlain and a companion killed four Iroquois with their muskets.
The Iroquois vowed revenge, and that hostility lasted for more than 150 years.

The Iroquois obtained firearms from Dutch traders pushing up the Hudson River at just this time.
What the Dutch traders wanted most of all was furs, and the Iroquois resolved to monopolize the fur trade.
The Iroquois Confederation (the so called Five tribes) were by far the most powerful and organized Indian power at that time.

The Iroquois embarked on a remarkable series of wars, lasting most of the 17th century.

The French at one time were on the point of abandoning Quebec altogether.
The Iroquois unexpectedly offered peace terms, thinking to maintain a balance of power between the French and the English.
For a hundred years, the French could only reach the Great Lakes by ascending the Ottawa River to a portage, thence to Georgian Bay on Lake Huron.

The Iroquois also started a war of conquest against their Indian neighbors.
Iroquoian speaking tribes were absorbed (Eries and Susquehannocks, etc).
Other tribes were driven away, so as to maintain the fur monopoly.
This had the effect of clearing the middle and southern colonies of most Indians east of the mountains.
The Shawnee and Delaware, for instance, were driven west to the Ohio Country.

The Iroquois followed the "Warriors Path" southwards via the Shenandoah Valley for two generations, reaching as far south as the Cherokee lands.
In the Carolinas, they deported the entire tribe of Iroquoian speaking Tuscaroras, resettling them in their homeland of upstate New York.
The Five Nations became the Six Nations.

The constant warfare with the Cherokee also drove away most tribes from Kentucky and much of Tennessee.
Kentucky became the "Dark and Bloody Ground", criss-crossed by war parties, but abandoned otherwise.
Until Daniel Boone led settlers through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky.
But that's another story...
