Well something failed and knocked a hole in the timing chain cover at 230k miles.

Well I'm pushing 230k miles but she ran like a dream. Just driving and heard a BANG inside the cab and lost oil pressure. So no clue yet, I'm in the middle of tearing the timing cover off. So we will see.

From the crack on the right I almost think it may have failed from the inside.

Most likely some kind of failure with the timing chain or related parts. It may be repairable and it may not.

Oh absolutely something from the inside knocked it out. But it still starts and engine runs fine. Im still stripping it down but im curious what happened. 20250726_193230.jpg

Very possible but if the chain failed the engine wouldn't run but it does run and smoothly. So I'm very curious as to what happened. Definitely no oil pressure it says on the dash.

Yeah, I posted that comment before you stated that it runs and I was basing my assumption from a picture only. You will find out when you get the tear down completed. Good luck!

Wow! By the looks of it, that didn't happen at idle...

    Best of luck!

Looks like the oil pump exploded, it's in the timing cover right behind the pulley where the crack is.

My vote is the oil pump.

Oil pump sucked something up. One guy’s motor grenaded after a rocker’s needle bearing fell out of the roller and eventually got picked up by the oil pump.

230 k is a good run and impressive. Things do wear out and break, even on Tacomas

Well something very similar happened to this one as well. Exploded the oil pump gear. Also a rocker floating around. There's also more to come.

Interesting, that's something I might expect to see on a Chrysler or Ford but not a Toyota.

Engine looks mint inside too, good job on maintenance.

It’s interesting to see rocker arm issues because some engines are known for them and some are not. I think it ultimately comes down to how loaded the cam is. High valve spring rates and DI fuel pumps don’t help. Maybe I haven’t followed closely enough but I have never heard of this issue on a Tundra, or a 2GRFE, or any other less complicated motor. I hear about it on Jeeps all the time but I have a feeling that’s due to the engines running at 220-245° and thinning out the oil too much to maintain adequate protection.

This isn’t a common FKS problem but it obviously sucks if it does happen. I’d imagine the collapsed lifter situation that people post up tapping videos about here probably doesn’t help keep the rocker roller in good shape.
