Anyone here mountain bike? Looking at some options - it's overwhelming to some degree; I don't want to do mad downhill mtn ski runs but want something that will last a bit. I feel there is no winning.

Sounds like you want something like 140mm travel. Thats a good travel for a solid trail bike. Get you though most. What price point you looking at

cool - that's about where I've been finding things; the current peep is 170 (more a DH bike) but okay price point: https://www.evo.com/mountain/specialized-status-2-170-complete-bike looks like specialized in general has end of season sales dropping.

it's hard - bikes are expensive and I don't want to spend a ton, but the low bar still seems up there. :p

okay yah - that ninner is more like some of the yeti bikes I was looking at as far as frame and suspension configuration goes -- there are just soooooo many options and I don't have any idea what I'll like. I used to like the crappy hardtail bike I had but at the same time we have more blue trails around here than green + the ski hill; which is mostly a nogo - I don't want to die (it's a scary hill for skiiing)

The dang status 2 also lends to my "do everything" - street, trail, park, dh - filling the idk what I want. lol. Those ninner bikes are sick though...

Yeah sometimes having 200mm of travel can be to much. My next all around bike will probably be 140-150mm

I really like my niner and trek. I rode a nukeproof hardtail for awhile too that was fun. And i had a specialized Evo and that was a good bike.
Honestly it just comes on the price and looks in the travel range you want

I’m not a good enough Friday to really know any better so I can hop on just about any good quality bike and feel comfortable

I'm far from good enough to tell bike A from bike B but I'm sure I can feel at least some difference. The last bike I had was sub $500 so I suspect ANYTHING I try will feel like an improvement. I also feel like I'm too early to think that what I get will be that one and done deal...sadly.

Ive riden these too. They are nice, and price is low. https://www.polygonbikes.com/siskiu-d-2/

eah going from like a big box store bike to even a entry level mtb like the polygon you can feel the difference, after that difference you can feel is small. I ride with alot of guys and we regularly will swap bikes on the trail. So I’ve gotten to experience alot of different things. And when you go from one trail bike to another it feels the same. but switching between a trail to a enduro or DH is when you can tell some difference as the bike slackens out.

but all these bikes now a days are built on modern geometry so they all free comfortable on the trail. And for like 90% of riders a 140-150 trail bike will get you though everything. Now if you plan to go do some more gnarly stuff then a 150-170 enduro might be your flavor. Anything bigger than 160mm i feel takes alot of the fun out of simple trails. Like riding my 200mm bike is kinda no fun on the local trails i have
