Bought my truck in summer of 2023, sitting at 23k miles, opened my door to put groceries in the back and noticed the door groaning and this bolt on the floor. It looks like it broke off the bolt latch. I am assuming I am still under warranty as this truck was bought new in July 2023 and only 23k miles on it that's within 3 years/36k obviously yes? Or should I just do it myself? What's easier? I hate taking my truck to the dealer but if this is a huge hassle I will. Thanks.

I would take it unless you have the tools(EZ out, drill, hardened drill bit)

That looks unusual so let the dealer check it out and repair it.

That is a stud that has snapped off of the door check strap assembly, and should (never done it myself on a tacoma) be as easy as taking off the door card, removing the remaining nut, and reaching inside the door to swap a new one in, as well as the one bolt that holds the strap bracket to the cab. I would fix it soon because you don't want the sheet metal around the remaining bolt to start cracking from the weird loading on it.

I've done these before. You can buy two off Amazon for $40...get the ones for the Tundra as they are stronger if you live in a windy area. As @akimmel said, that is a nut on a stud...no easy out required. Take the door trim panel off, zip the other nut off, take the bolt off that attaches it to the jamb...reverse install. You can be done in 30 minutes.

Let them "F" with it at the dealer. Go make an appointment with the service advisor and come back on that day. They won't want to cough up a rental and they will have it done in one day. You won't have to worry about buying parts, broken clips and BS.

And if a crack develops by the top bolt later, maybe you can point to this as evidence of why they need to fix that too.

Replacing a door check on a Tacoma isn't hard -- we Gen 1 owners have done it multiple times.

But if the truck is under warranty I'd have the dealer do it, no doubt!

I'm all in on a DIY job, but in this case I'd opt for a warranty job... I'd be worried that they will scratch paint extracting that bolt... The dealership generally yields one thing fixed and something else broken....fingers crossed

^Looks like you didn't read this thread before replying. There's no bolt to extract. The door check is replaced.

    What would crack? It’s a check strap…

Interesting post. My ‘23 has less than 16k miles on it, and I have heard the rear drivers side door groan a few times when opened to its full-open position. I’ll have to keep my eye on it.

    The door itself.

But the broken stud of the check strap wouldn’t cause that at all. The check strap is inserted from the inside of the door. The nuts simply locate the strap and provide resistance when closing the door on the detents.
